Career night for Laufersweiler

MAXWELL — JT Laufersweiler tossed six touchdowns and the St. Edmond football team dominated their district opener here Friday night over Collins-Maxwell, 61-14.

Laufersweiler was 8-for-11 for 249 yards, hitting four different players for scores for the Gaels (2-0 overall, 1-0 in district). Fellow senior Leo Ehn and sophomore Kinnick Henning each caught two TDs while Jakob Koopman and Grant Galles had the other two.

“That was one of the best performances in all aspects of the game that we’ve had,” SEHS head coach Matt Dillon said. “JT was unstoppable out there through the air and our receivers did a great job of getting separation and finishing plays.

“Listen, we saw what (Collins-Maxwell) did last week and we knew we had to come ready to play. I thought we did just that from the first snap until the end.”

Laufersweiler and Klay Baker each had a rushing touchdown with Koleman Hanson finishing the game with a defensive score on a forced fumble and recovery in the end zone.

Ehn caught three passes for 94 yards, Galles had two receptions for 76 and Henning had two for 54. Laufersweiler led the team with 74 yards rushing while Baker added another 52.

“Our run game set up the pass,” Dillon said. “When you can do that, and you have someone that is hitting his targets like JT was, this is the kind of night you can have on offense. Our guys did a tremendous job of protecting him and giving him time to make the throws.”

Koopman, Hanson and Ethan Swisher each picked off passes, Henning and Hanson recovered fumbles and Quintin Jaeschke had a sack. Hanson also made five extra-point attempts.

St. Edmond jumped on the board quickly, as Laufersweiler hit Koopman on a 30-yard strike just a minute into the game. Laufersweiler ran in a second score near the end of the quarter.

“We really dominated the first quarter and that set the tone,” Dillon said. “Our defense put pressure on them and our offense controlled the line of scrimmage.”

Cooper Wierson got the Spartans on the board in the second before the Gaels scored six consecutive touchdowns including four in the second quarter to take a 40-6 lead at the half.

Up next for St. Edmond will be Baxter, who was a district champion last year, inside Dodger Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
