Five area squads in first AP prep rankings

Five Messenger-area teams are ranked in the seaon’s first Associated Press prep football poll.

Humboldt (1-0) is fourth in Class 3A with one first-place vote. The Wildcats dominated Spencer, 20-3, in their opener last Friday. Coen Matson ran for 108 yards. Mason Van Pelt had a rushing touchdown.

Nolan Gustafson kicked two field goals. Corey Dettmann returned an interception for a TD.

Webster City, which picked up a dramatic 35-28 victory over Fort Dodge, is rated ninth in Class 3A.

Jaxon Cherry ran for 266 yards and three touchdowns. Keegan Hisler threw a TD strike to Jesse Crutcher in the final minute to seal the win.

In Class 2A, Southeast Valley is rated sixth. South Central Calhoun is eighth in Class A, and West Bend-Mallard is ninth in the eight-player Top-10.

The Jaguars earned a 26-8 win over Manson Northwest Webster in Week 1. Cale VanSickle threw for 114 yards. Logan Jaeschke, Brady Hanson and Drew Temple had rushing TDs.

The Titans earned a 34-14 win over Pocahontas Area. Gavin Batta threw for 125 yards and a pair of scores, while a balanced rushing attack accumulated 237 yards and a pair of scores. Zach Trott (60 yards), Cole Higgins (57), Brock Nattress (55) and Batta (55) led the way.

In their opener, the Wolverines beat Newell-Fonda for the first time since 2014 by a final of 44-16.

Landon Montag (147) and Cole Fehr (143) led the ground attack with three and two touchdowns, respectively. Logan Grimm also reached the end zone twice.

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows is receiving votes in Class 2A.

The top-ranked squads are West Des Moines Dowling (5A), Council Bluffs Lewis Central (4A), Nevada (3A), Van Meter (2A), Grundy Center (1A), West Hancock (A) and Gladbrook-Reinbeck (8-man).
