Ayala, Ross advance
Dodgers both in Fargo semifinals
FARGO, N.D. — A pair of Fort Dodge Dodgers have reached the national semifinal round at Fargo Nationals.
Senior-to-be Dru Ayala is in the 113-pound Junior Freestyle semis, where he will face Pennsylvania standout Aaron Seidel of Northern Lebanon (Pa.). Ayala is a two-time state runner-up for FDSH; Seidel is a Pennsylvania state gold medalist with a career prep record of 97-1, and NHSCA national champion at 106 pounds.
Jake Knight of Bettendorf is still alive on the other side of the bracket. Knight edged Ayala in last year’s 113-pound finals at the Iowa High School state wrestling tournament.
Ayala is 106-12 in three seasons as a Dodger.
Ross, a 2023 Fort Dodge state champ and a Fargo titleist a year ago, squares off with David Calkins of California in the 16U semis at 195 pounds. Danarii Mickel of Ames — Ross’s gold-medal opponent this past season at state — is in the other semifinal.
The 15-year-old Ross was recently named the top wrestling recruit in the nation for the Class of 2026 by MatScouts. The two-sport star already has Div. I football offers from Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska, Missouri, Purdue and Minnesota.
Ross is a Cadet World Championships team member thanks to a U17 national Greco crown, and a national folkstyle champion.
