Area players earn All-State status
Humboldt’s Elsie Hubbell and Paige Opheim were among the area all-state softball selections announced by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.
Hubbell and Opheim were both tabbed to the Class 3A third team alongside Algona’s Reagan Haynes.
In 1A, Newell-Fonda’s Mia and Mary Walker made the first team with Bishop Garrigan’s Abbie Capesius on the second.
Emily Meyer, Shelby Fraker and Olivia Von Bank of North Union all made 2A teams, while Pocahontas Area’s Addison Lawson was on the third. Webster City’s Delainey Bargfrede was selected to the 4A third-team.
Hubbell, a sophomore for the Wildcats, hit .380 with 12 doubles, three homers and 14 RBI. She also posted an on-base percentage of .466 with a slugging percentage of .590.
Opheim, a freshman, hit .386 with 21 RBI, 10 doubles, a pair of home runs and a triple. She also scored 28 runs and had a fielding percentage of .970.
Haynes put together a .397 season at the plate as an eighth-grader for the Bulldogs, recording six doubles, two triples while driving in 26. She threw out eight would-be runners and had a .977 fielding percentage behind the plate.
Mia Walker had a .513 batting average to lead the Mustangs, scoring 49 runs with 50 hits including four doubles and three triples. She drove in 26, stole 38 bases and went 18-6 as a pitcher with 217 strikeouts in 156 innings.
Twin sister and fellow future Des Moines Area player Mary Walker hit .424 with 49 runs, 26 RBI and 38 steals. She also had four doubles and three triples.
Capesius, who was part of back-to-back state championship basketball teams at Bishop Garrigan, hit .564 with an on-base of .589 and a slugging of 1.064 as a junior. She finished with 35 runs, 35 RBI, 15 steals, 12 doubles, nine triples and three homers.
Meyer was one of the top two-way players in the state, going 21-7 inside the circle with 255 strikeouts in 155 innings. The first team selection senior also hit .400 with 11 home runs, nine doubles and 33 RBI.
Fraker, named to the second, hit .475 with 41 runs, 30 steals, five triples and 12 RBI for the Warriors. Von Bank, a third team pick as a senior, hit .393 with six homers and 31 RBI.
Lawson put together a junior campaign that saw her hit .442 with 34 runs scored, 12 doubles and 25 RBI. She also stole nine bases and had a fielding percentage of .975.
Bargfrede, who has committed to Western Kentucky, went 16-7 as a junior with 178 strikeouts and just 26 walks. She also hit .337 with six doubles, 16 RBI and a home run.
Mary Walker, Capesius, Meyer and Bargfrede were all repeat selections.
Williamsburg’s Adam C. Berte was named the 3A coach of the year. Berte was a standout athlete at Twin River Valley before playing baseball at Iowa Central.
