No. 2 Dodgers impressive again
DES MOINES — Fort Dodge stayed red hot at the plate here on Wednesday, as the second-ranked Dodgers plated 27 runs in a twinbill sweep at Des Moines East.
The Dodgers (5-1 overall) crushed the Scarlets in the opener, 14-1, before taking care of business with a 13-8 nightcap triumph.
Senior Lydia Lara homered twice, sophomore Meah McCaleb went deep, and eighth-grader Hope Alstott collected seven hits in the doubleheader for FDSH.
“Everyone did a great job of contributing in their own way,” Dodger head coach Andi Adams said. “That’s the best kind of night, when you have all of your players locked in and doing their part. Even when we hit some rought patches, our players kept after it and fought.
“Early in the season, the execution isn’t always going to be perfect. But you can tell a lot about a team from the effort and chemistry. This group has both.”
Sophomore Lucy Porter struck out 12 and allowed only two hits in game one. Porter helped her own cause by going 2-for-3 at the plate and driving in a pair.
McCaleb racked up four RBI. Alstott was 3-for-3 with two runs while driving in two.
Eighth-grader Ellie Doster added three hits. Sophomores Cadence Touney and Ashlyn Wills both drove in a couple.
The offense surged again in the second tilt, with Lara driving in four. Alstott was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI again.
Touney scored three times. Porter recorded two hits. Junior Mackenzie McIlrath knocked in a pair.
Lara picked up the win, with Porter notching the save.
“Lydia gave up two homers (to East’s Samara Purdy), but she kept after it,” Adams said. “(The Scarlets) have some tough hitters. We got down (5-4), but came back (with eight unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth innings combined).
“It’s not always going to be pretty, but we were adjusting and getting the job done.”
The Dodgers, who didn’t commit an error, pulled through when Porter closed the door with the bases loaded and the tying run on deck in the bottom of the seventh.
Fort Dodge hosts Mason City for an Iowa Alliance Conference Northern Division twinbill on Thursday, beginning at 5 p.m.
