No. 10 Gaels upset No. 3 Hawks

CARROLL — The 10th-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond softball team scored a key early-season victory here Saturday.

The Gaels downed No. 3 (1A) Remsen St. Mary’s in the CYO Tournament, 2-1, as freshman Faith Shirbroun kept the Hawk hitters at bay.

Shirbroun spun a five-hitter with two walks and a strikeout, helping her own cause with a pair of hits and a stolen base.

Hadley Oswald delivered a two-RBI double for the winning runs for St. Edmond (9-1 overall), who also trounced Sioux City Heelan, 14-0 in five innings. Shirbroun and Oswald each made the all-tournament team.

Kaili Henning was 2-for-3 with a run scored vs. Remsen St. Mary’s, as she earned the win inside the circle in the game vs. Heelan. Henning struck out 10 and allowed just two hits without walking a batter.

The Hawks entered the day having scored 15, 17 and 11 runs in their last three games. They were averaging just over 11 runs a game.

“Faith did a tremendous job of locating her pitches and the defense was exceptional behind her,” SEHS head coach Bill Shirbroun said. “We knew we needed to be at our best against a quality team like Remsen St. Mary’s. After losing the opener of the season to Newell-Fonda, the girls wanted to get a win like this under their belts.”

Shirbroun needed just 71 pitches to get through the seven innings, with the SEHS defense committing just one error.

Eighth-grader Myrah Lemon made her first varsity start, recording a double.

Along with her two-hitter vs. Heelan, Henning also had a hit, a run scored and stole two bases. Anna Kolacia stole two bases, scored twice and drove in a run, while Ansley Oswald was 3-for-3 with a double, three RBI and three runs.

Hadley Oswald drove in four with a triple, three hits and two runs scored, while Shirbroun had two doubles.

Lauren Gibb scored twice and reached base three times, while Payton Bradley scored twice.

“Kaili was dealing,” Shirbroun said. “And we really got after it at the plate. We played five games in three days, but the girls were still competing hard and challenging themselves until the end vs. Heelan.”

St. Edmond returns home to host North Central Conference foe Algona on Monday night at 7:30 p.m.
