LAS VEGAS — Broedy Collins Hendricks of Humboldt was crowned a United States Open freestyle champion at 75kg on Sunday.
Hendricks, an eighth-grader in the Humboldt School District, clinched the title and an automatic bid to Fargo Nationals with a victory over Isai Fernandez in the finals, 13-9. Representing Team Valley, Hendricks defeated the top seed in the quarterfinals on his way to the top.
Hendricks isn’t a stranger to the big stage. Last fall, he secured a Super 32 Challenge crown in Greensboro, N.C.
Hendricks also placed second on the Greco side in the 15U bracket in Las Vegas this past weekend.
Hendricks captured a state AAU gold medal in Cedar Falls earlier this year, and last month, earned a 16U Folkstyle Nationals title at 170 pounds despite still being just a middle school student.
Hendricks will be a freshman next high school wrestling season at Humboldt for head coach Chad Beaman.
