Goodner third for Dodgers

AMES — Emily Goodner put together a strong performance here Wednesday for the Fort Dodge girls tennis team, but it was not quite enough to advance.

Goodner placed third at a Class 2A regional singles meet.

After a loss to No. 2 seed Esther Guan of Ankeny Centennial in the semifinals, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, Goodner bounced back to knock off Katie Larson of Norwalk for bronze, 6-0, 6-1.

Ashlyn Headlee earned a win in the opening round over Cate Bright of Des Moines Roosevelt, 6-2, 6-4, before falling to top-seed Abbie Peterson from Ankeny Centennial, 6-0, 6-0.

“For Emily, losing that first set was just difficult to rally from,” FDSH head coach Julie Astor said. “You find yourself in a hole against a quality opponent and it is tough.

“I thought Ashlyn really played Peterson well. She got that first win and even though the score might not show it, she really battled with her.”

Peterson went on to defeat her teammate, Guan, for the title with both advancing to state.

In doubles, Olivia Hamlow and Hailey Folsom, along with Claire Dardenne and Kaitlyn Folsom were knocked off in the first round.

Ankeny Centennial also claimed both state-qualifying spots in doubles.

Fort Dodge will compete Saturday morning at home vs. Sioux City West in a 2A team regional event beginning at 9 a.m.

Starting at $4.94/week.
