WATERLOO — The Fort Dodge softball team had little trouble picking up a season-opening sweep here Monday night over Waterloo East.
The Dodgers posted 19-1 and 12-0 victories vs. the Trojans in games that ended early.
In the opener, Maggie Elsbecker and Ellie Doster each collected three hits, with Elsbecker scoring three times and driving in two from the leadoff spot. Doster drove in three, as did Lucy Porter.
Lydia Lara went 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs, while Meah McCaleb scored four times and drove in two. Ashlyn Wills also collected a pair of RBI.
Fort Dodge (2-0 overall) scored two in the first, four in the second, six in the third and seven in the fourth.
“We just absolutely obliterated the ball up and down the lineup,” FDSH head coach Andi Adams said. “It was fun to see, especially since there were some nerves there at the start with so many new girls and so many of them in new positions.
“I was just so happy with how they attacked the ball and ran the bases. We also had some amazing plays on defense.”
The nightcap saw more of the same, as McCaleb had three hits, Doster drove in two and Elsbecker had two hits and two runs scored.
Macy Brown was 2-for-3 with a run scored and both Wills and Hope Alstott had a hit, run and an RBI. Porter and Lara each earned a win inside the circle.
“I thought both of them did a nice job pitching,” Adams said. “Doster and Brown had great nights behind the plate.”
After a four-run first, the Dodgers added one in the third, five in the fourth and two more in the fifth, finishing the doubleheader with 27 hits and 31 runs scored.
This marked the first time the two programs have played one another since the 2015 season.
Fort Dodge makes its home debut on Tuesday night at Rogers Park vs. Dallas Center-Grimes beginning at 7:30 p.m. Former Dodger standouts and current University of Iowa players Jalen Adams and Tory Bennett will be signing posters starting at 5:30 p.m., and will also be throwing out the first pitch.
