Two more wins for Iowa Central softball

INDIANOLA — The Iowa Central softball team swept Ellsworth at Simpson College on Monday in their ICCAC league opener.

The Tritons (11-12-1 overall, 2-0 in the ICCAC) won the first conference tilt, 12-8, and pulled out a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener — which was supposed to be the team’s home debut, before being moved due to unplayable local field conditions — the Tritons scored out the gate with two in the first, but the Panthers had an eight run third to take an 8-2 advantage.

Iowa Central scored three in both the fourth and fifth and capped the rally with four in the sixth.

“It was a dogfight both games,” said ICCC head coach Bo Tjeben. “We gave up eight in the first game early, but kept chipping away.

“This conference is going to be tough every time out, like always.”

Morgan Weeks led the way with three hits, while Riley Gilroy, Olivia Harmon, Myra Megli, Calli Schell and Aleena Sandy added two hits each.

Sydney Ballard, Schell and Gilroy all socked home runs. Sandy drove in four, while Harmon and Schell chipped in two RBI each.

In the nightcap, the Tritons trailed 4-2 heading into the fifth. They plated two in the fifth and one in the sixth for another comeback triumph.

Katelyn Dennis went seven innings, allowing four hits and fanning four.

Amber McKinney finished with two hits and drove in a run. Harmon and Megli each recorded an RBI.

“It was a good team effort,” Tjebben said. “Riley Gilroy came in in the first game and shut them down. Katie Dennis pitched a really good game two, and we had some clutch hits.

“Olivia Harmon had some big hits in both games.”

The Tritons will face Ellsworth again on Tuesday.
