Area athletes shine at indoor opener in Humboldt
HUMBOLDT — Area athletes were able to show off their early-season skills in the Nielsen High School Boys and Girls Indoor track meets at the Nielsen Family REC Center.
On the girls’ side, Alyssa Richman of Manson Northwest Webster captured gold in the 800-meter run (2:28.40) and 1500-meter run (4:58.99). Richman also helped the Cougars’ 4×400-meter relay team, which included Kyla Egli, Raygin Anderson and Preslie Oswald, win in 4:40.90.
Reagan Murphy of Bishop Garrigan was a triple winner in the 60- and 200-meter dash (times of 8.30 and 29.33) and 60-meter hurdles (10.19).
The Humboldt 4×800 (Alana Malo, Meg Zweibohmer, Tori Gargano and Sophia Harris, 12:23.85) and distance medley (Tayla Wempen, Bella Metli, Morgan Mann and Brynn Malo, 4:46.51) grabbed gold, as did Algona’s 4×60 squad of Allison Casey, Jillian Burns, Alyssa Miller and Ashlyn Waldera (44.00).
In the field events, Mann won the high jump (4-10). Southeast Valley’s Alex Kitchen took the shot put (36-7).
In the boys’ competition, Josiah DeYoung of Pocahontas Area prevailed in the 400-meter dash (54.27). Jayden Erpelding of Algona won the 200 in 25.18.
The Bulldogs’ quartet of Ashton Moreno, Gavin Weber, Caden Weber and Evan Allie took the 4×400-meter relay in 3:44.27 and the 4×800 (Joseph Ricklefs, Isaac Wilson, Weber and Weber) in 9:05.19.
The Pocahontas Area distance medley team of Andrew Pineda, Collin Dreith, Jacob Gerdes and DeYoung crossed first in 3:53.66.
Ethan Ackerson of Southeast Valley was the shot put champion with a toss of 51-7.
