DES MOINES — McKinley Robbins finished his high school as the most decorated wrestler in Greene County history.

In his fourth and final trip to Wells Fargo Arena, Robbins closed the season Saturday night in the championship round.

For the second time in his career, he was crowned Class 2A king.

“My relentless pace was huge to win that match,” Robbins said. “I’ve had a lot of ups and downs and highs and lows.

“It’s very humbling. I’ve made a lot of memories. Wrestling turned me into the person I am and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

The four-time state finalist joined teammate Kale Petersen — who had won a gold medal of his own a few minutes earlier — as the school’s only two-time state champions.

The Rams brought home three medals, the most in school history, as sophomore Brent Dennhardt (40-8) was eighth.

Robbins (138) earned a major decision over Keokuk’s second-seed Tate O’Shea (25-2). Robbins dominated the entire match with a 15-5 major decision.

During the tournament Robbins (48-0) had two falls, a major decision and a decision.

“It was pretty cool to get the job done,” Robbins said. “Last year finishing second, I knew I would have this time around (to make amends).

“Winning this was especially nice, knowing I wouldn’t have another chance.”

Robbins, an Oregon State commit, finishes his career as the school’s all-time wins leader at 164-6.

Petersen (132) captured his third state title, second with the Rams. After taking sixth as a freshman at West Fork, he became the school’s first state champ as a sophomore.

Petersen’s title on Saturday night came via a 7-3 decision over third-seeded junior Anders Kittelson (50-3) of Osage.

“I felt like I wrestled a good match. It was a tough one, because we know each other pretty well,” Petersen said. “This is big for Greene County, being the first to win two titles and having three medalists.”

Petersen (42-0), a University of Iowa commit, had three major decision victories to go along with the championship decision.

In his four-year career, Petersen compiled a 106-9 mark.

Dennhardt (40-8) took eighth for the Rams. He lost the 145-pound seventh place match to fourth-seeded junior Jackson Jaspers (43-5) of Mount Vernon.

Starting at $2.99/week.
