Wartburg 3rd with Mayer; Moon an A-A

LANSING, Mich. — The Wartburg women’s cross country team finished third at the NCAA Div. III Championships.

Riley Mayer, a St. Edmond graduate, was 132nd overall in a time of 23:41.4 for the Knights, who were only behind John Hopkins and the University of Chicago in the team standings.

This was the best team finish for Wartburg at nationals since 2012 and marked the third consecutive Top-6 finish for the program, with Mayer part of all three of those teams.

In the men’s race, South Central Calhoun graduate Spencer Moon was 10th overall, earning All-American status.

Moon, a member of the Simpson team, clocked a time of 25:12.00 to record the second-best national showing in program history.

“Spencer was incredible,” said Simpson head coach Heath Moenck, a former Webster City standout. “He’s one of the top runners in the country and he showcased it.

“To be in the Top-10 in the country is special. He’s worked extremely hard for this over the years and this was a great end to the season.”

This was Moon’s second straight appearance after placing 118th last year.
