Standout Coon continues to shine in junior-year spotlight

CEDAR FALLS -- Lance Coon feels at peace when he's on the football field.
The Humboldt junior is in his own world when he puts on his Wildcat jersey.
"It's pretty black and white: I live for football,'' Coon said. "It's a second home for me and when I'm there…nothing else matters.
"God has blessed me with some natural talent and I truly believe that if you put talent, and passion, and perseverance together, the sky's the limit."
After reaching the UNI-Dome last season as an underclassman, Coon went to work preparing himself and his body for his junior campaign.
"I loved any and all doubt I received coming out of (2021) -- both individually and as a team,'' Coon said. "If you're only praised, you will never get better. Criticism leads to improvement which leads to success, so really I knew what I wanted to achieve this year and what steps were necessary to get there.
"The guys were hungry."
Coon has vaulted himself to the top of Class 3A with 1,511 yards, and has scored the second-most touchdowns (21).
In the two postseason contests for the Wildcats, Coon has carried the ball 35 times for 350 yards and five TDs. He has seven career postseason trips to the end zone including 2021.
With his output against Independence a week ago, Coon reached the 2,000-yard career mark. He has 294 carries for the Wildcats and 26 touchdowns.
The Humboldt football team has received unwavering support from the community, and it is fully appreciated by the players.
"There are many supporters that have helped us see that our work doesn't go unnoticed,'' Coon said. "Whether it's a card or a conversation, each one motivates us to get up and do it all over again.
"A quote I've lived by is, 'do what others won't today so you can do what others can't tomorrow.'"
