NEWELL -- Thanks to an upset, the Newell-Fonda football team gets one more opportunity to compete at home.
The Mustangs (9-1 overall) host Gladbrook-Reinbeck (9-1) here Thursday night in the eight-player quarterfinals.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Behind a 35-point second half, Newell-Fonda handed Don Bosco its first loss of the season last week, 35-10. Mason Dicks had 126 yards rushing and a touchdown, while also throwing a TD pass to Ryan Greenfield.
Dicks completed 5 of 9 for 58 yards, with Greenfield rushing for 90 and catching three passes for 38.
Braden Wells and the Mustang defense kept the Dons out of the end zone after the half, as Wells recorded two sacks, Dicks picked off two passes and both Greenfield and Zach Mercer recovered fumbles.
Caden Meyer had 8.5 tackles in the win.
Dicks, a returning all-state player, has thrown for 1,346 yards and 21 TDs, while rushing for 644 and 11. Greenfield has over 1,100 yards of total offense and 20 touchdowns.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck has won three in a row since a 35-32 loss to Don Bosco, including a 30-28 upset of Turkey Valley in the playoffs last week. Juniors Isaac Clark has thrown for 1,631 yards and 27 touchdowns, adding another 571 and 14 on the ground.
Austin Vaverka, also an 11th-grader, has 1,101 yards rushing, 393 yards receiving and 28 combined scores.
The other quarterfinals feature GTRA (9-1) at Remsen St. Mary's (10-0), Fremont-Mills (8-2) visiting Lenox (10-0) and Montezuma (9-2) battling Wayland-WACO (11-0).
Newell-Fonda captured the 2014 eight-player football championship. They also earned a win over Don Bosco in the quarters that year before besting Victor-HLV in the semis and Fremont-Mills in the finals.
