ALGONA -- The sixth-ranked Humboldt football team rebounded from their first loss in a key way here Friday night knocking off Algona, 31-8.
With district-leading Nevada falling to North Polk, the Wildcats will finish in a three-way tie for the title. The RPI will determine the order of qualifiers, which Humboldt was No. 4 in this week.
Junior running back Lance Coon went wild, scoring two of his four touchdowns on the night in the first quarter. Coon ran for 206 yards on 22 carries, averaging over nine yards per attempt.
Tayeton Lohaus, a South Dakota commit, had three sacks, while several other Wildcat defenders pressured Alex Manske all night. Owen Hubbell had a team-high eight tackles, with Trever Beach and Ty Gargano recording six.
"I am proud of the way our guys bounced back," Humboldt head coach Derrick Elman said. "Lance did a great job of getting behind blocks. I thought our offensive line played their best game.
"Tayeton had an awesome game, Trever hit a big field goal and I can't wait to see who our opponent is Saturday."
Gargano also picked off a Manske pass and Beach was 4-for-7 on extra-point attempts and made a 40-yard field goal.
Coon found the end zone on runs of 18, 11, 49 and 5, with all four coming in the opening 24 minutes.
Will Orness was 6-for-11 for 89 yards passing, as Corey Dettmann caught four passes for 38 yards. Beach and Mason Van Pelt each had a catch.
Manske, a sophomore, was 15-for-22 passing for 134 yards, adding 26 yards rushing. Lamorn Ulfers had 72 yards rushing and a touchdown, while also catching five passes for 63 yards.
Tate Slagle led the Algona defense with five tackles and Hunter Kollasch had a sack.
