GILBERTVILLE -- The rubber match, seven years later, went to Newell-Fonda here Friday night.
The eighth-ranked Mustangs scored a 35-10 upset of No. 3 Don Bosco to advance to the quarterfinals of the eight-player playoffs.
Back in 2015, the Dons posted a 30-7 victory in the state semifinals over Newell-Fonda, who won the year before, 37-36. That one-point win also came here on the way to the championship for Brian Wilken and the Mustangs.
Newell-Fonda (9-1 overall) will face Gladbrook-Reinbeck next Thursday in the quarterfinals. Gladbrook-Reinbeck (9-1) knocked off Turkey Valley, 30-28.
Following a scoreless first quarter, Don Bosco jumped out to a 10-0 lead as Ty Purdy hit Dawson Youngblut and Andrew Kimball drilled a field goal.
From that point on, it was all Newell-Fonda.
The Mustangs scored 35 unanswered points. Mason Dicks found Ryan Greenfield to get them on the board, and the Mustangs took their first lead after causing a turnover.
Dicks hit paydirt from 69 yards out to push the lead to 21-10, and both Greenfield and Wyatt Kreft added fourth quarter touchdowns.
Don Bosco came into the game averaging almost 58 points a night. The Dons had scored over 85 twice and 60 in two other games. Newell-Fonda, though, held its third opponent in the last four to under 10 points.
