Humboldt’s Malo wins title

EAGLE GROVE — One of the oldest cross country meets in the state took place here Tuesday night, as the Dick Bell Invitational was held at the Eagle Grove Country Club.

Humboldt’s Brynn Malo captured the Class A girls title. Malo finished ahead of Gilbert’s Clare Stahr and Abby McGuire, but the Tigers won the team title thanks to six in the Top-8.

Algona’s Malyn Davis was 11th overall, while Madison Axtell led Eagle Grove with a 25th-place finish.

Humboldt was after Gilbert in the team standings, followed by Garner-Hayfield/Ventura, Estherville-LC and Algona.

Gilbert’s William Wadlsey held off Algona’s Ryan Stundahl for the Class A boys title, helping the Tigers earn the team crown over the Bulldogs. Gilbert had six in the Top-9, with Jace Mortensen joining Stundahl in the Top-10 for Algona.

Eagle Grove’s Drake Weland finished 11th overall, while Humboldt’s top finish came courtesy Gabe Thumma was 19th. Webster City’s Brayden Henely placed 25th overall.

The Gilbert boys were followed by Algona, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura, Eagle Grove, Humboldt, Estherville-LC and Webster City in the team standings.
