Record night for Cherry
WEBSTER CITY -- Webster City had zero passing yards on Friday night and they didn't need any.
The Lynx (6-3 overall, 4-1 in district) rushed for nine touchdowns as they cruised to a 65-7 victory over Denison-Schleswig (4-5, 2-3).
Jaxon Cherry etched his name into the school record book.
The junior running back rushed for four touchdowns, giving him 29 on the season and tying the single season rushing touchdown mark with Gavin Dinsdale (2015).
Cherry carried the ball 15 times for 154 yards and four scores.
Ty McKinney had seven carries for 32 yards and one score.
CJ Hisler had eight totes for 99 yards and a score.
Jayden Weinzetl and Camden Schultz also had rushing touchdowns.
Mustangs explode in second half
NEWELL -- The Newell-Fonda football team used a big second half to down Harris-Lake Park here Friday night in eight-player playoff action, 55-26.
The eighth-ranked Mustangs led 28-20 at the break before pulling away over the final 24 minutes. Newell-Fonda's lone loss this season came to No. 1 and district rival Remsen St. Mary's.
Harris-Lake Park, the third-place finisher from the same district as St. Edmond, cut the lead to 28-26 after the first drive of the second half. From there, it was all Mustangs.
"I thought the ability of our defensive line was the difference," N-F head coach Brian Wilken said. "Those guys made big plays for us in the end."
Mason Dicks was 12-for-14 passing for 213 yards with four touchdowns, adding 100 yards rushing and a score on 14 carries. Dicks hit Zach Mercer three times for 70 yards, with two of those receptions going for TDs.
Caden Vanden Bosch and Wyatt Kreft also caught touchdowns from Dicks, while Ryan Greenfield had 12 rushes for 121 yards and a 54-yard score. Greenfield also caught five passes for 62 yards.
Max Carlson recorded 16 tackles, while Ty Tauber, Caden Meyer and Mercer each had 10. Both Meyer and Mercer were key figures off the Newell-Fonda defensive line.
"We just did a much better job after that first drive in the third quarter," Wilken said. "Having two kids on the defensive line with 10 tackles was a big thing for us and a key part in the win."
On the year, the Mustangs have scored over 48 points in five games.
Newell-Fonda, making its 19th appearance in the postseason, has reached the playoff round 11 of the last 12 years, including three straight.
Six in a row for Greene County
JEFFERSON -- The Greene County football team won their sixth in a row here Friday night, toppling Union Community, 35-13, in the Class 2A playoffs.
The sixth-ranked Rams have not lost since a 35-0 setback to fellow playoff qualifier Carroll Kuemper in early September.
Greene County, though, was tied with Union after the first quarter, 7-7, before scoring 28 unanswered to pull away. They are in the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season and eighth overall, with former Prairie Valley standout Caden Duncan serving as head coach each of the last four.
WB-M advances
WEST BEND -- The West Bend-Mallard football team had no trouble with Clarksville here Friday night, advancing in the eight-player playoffs with a 48-0 win.
Max Fehr led the Wolverines, accounting for five touchdowns. He was 4-for-4 passing for 124 yards and two touchdowns. He carried the ball 16 times for 91 yards and three touchdowns.
District runners-up to GTRA, the Wolverines ended their playoff drought, qualifying for the first time since 2015. This is the 21st appearance all-time in the postseason for the school.
West Bend-Mallard scored twice in the first and added two more TDs in the second. They kept the pressure on with a score in the third and two final touchdowns in the fourth quarter to improve to 7-2 on the year.
Eagle Grove denied by Falcons
APLINGTON -- The Eagle Grove football team went up against a state elite here Friday night, falling in the Class 1A playoffs to sixth-ranked Aplington-Parkersburg, 56-8.
The Falcons scored two quick touchdowns in the first before adding 29 points in the second to lead 42-0 at the half.
During the regular season, the Eagles picked up wins over MVAOCOU, Manson Northwest Webster and Belmond-Klemme, with the final two leading to a playoff bid out of the district.
The three wins matched the total from a year ago, which came on the heels of back-to-back winless campaigns following a 6-3 season in 2017. This was the second consecutive appearance in the postseason for EGHS and seventh overall.
Seniors Tate Richardson, Cayden Schultz, Kaden Pritchard, Orlando Hernandez, Korey Anderson, Jack Mendoza, Zach Pamperin, Dustin Dawson and John Pamperin all graduate for the Eagles.
ESC handled by West Sioux
HAWARDEN -- Perennial state contender West Sioux ended the season of East Sac County here in Class 1A playoff action, 58-0.
The Raiders got into the playoffs following late-season wins over MVAOCOU and West Monona by a combined 12 points.
This marked the final game for East Sac County seniors Weston Drost, Hutton Pasche, Jacob Carroll, Jacob Murley and Chandler Quirk.
West Sioux, the state runners-up a year ago, have now won six in a row.
E-Hawks knocked out
STORM LAKE -- The Emmetsburg football team ran into a strong Carroll Kuemper unit here Friday night, bowing out in the Class 1A playoffs, 35-8.
Down 35-0 late in the fourth, the E-Hawks got on the scoreboard and converted the two-point attempt.
After starting 0-2, Emmetsburg reeled off wins over South Central Calhoun, Sibley-Ocheyedan, Sioux Center and Ridge View around a loss to West Sioux. They finished the year 4-5.
As a program, this marked the 43rd appearance in the postseason for the E-Hawks, which ranks second behind only West Des Moines Dowling. One other school, Harlan, has over 40 in Iowa high school football history.
The game was held at Buena Vista University.
Warriors fall in scorefest
HARTLEY -- The North Union football team couldn't match touchdowns with Hartley-HMS here Friday night, falling in a Class A contest, 46-31.
The Warriors, who went 5-4 this year, previously won titles as Sentral Fenton in eight-player back in 2002 and '03.
Back in 2016, Hartley-HMS ended a 14-game losing streak with a 20-6 win over North Union during the regular season.
Titans dropped by Western Christian
HULL -- The South Central Calhoun football team fell to Western Christian here Friday night in the Class 1A playoffs, 36-18.
The Titans were down 14-6 at the half, but were outscored 14-6 in the third quarter by the Wolfpack.
South Central Calhoun, who went 3-2 down the stretch to qualify, graduates seniors Tyler Lightner, Chance Roeder, Jordan Moreno, Justin Hanks, Dominik Kistler, Waylen Gemberling, Bryan Steig, Khyean Hawkins, Hunter Winker and Levi Evonski.
Cowboys caught by Osage
OSAGE -- A big fourth quarter put Osage out front, as the Green Devils topped Clarion-Goldfield/Dows here Friday night in Class 1A postseason action, 49-15.
The Cowboys kept it close until the final 12 minutes when Osage scored three times. Clarion-Goldfield/Dows was down 7-6 after the first and 21-12 at the break, finishing 5-4 on the season in the sixth playoff appearance all-time and first since 2014.
Seniors for the Cowboys included Ethan Traub, Nevan Foss, Rigo Bobadilla, Mack Seaba, Cale Kirstein, Preston Gardner, Erick Perez, Nash Lienemann, Reid Huntley, Ashton Carlson, Owen Tew and Victor Arrona.
