CHERRY DOES IT AGAIN
STORM LAKE -- Webster City didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard on Friday night.
The Lynx (5-3 overall, 3-1 in district), cruised to a 55-7 victory over Storm Lake (0-8, 0-4).
Webster City held a 21-0 lead after three minutes in the game and were up 34-0 after the first quarter.
The Lynx started the running clock in the first half, as they took a 47-0 lead into the locker room.
It was another big night for Jaxon Cherry. The junior rushed for 154 yards on 12 carries and five touchdowns, all in the first half.
Cherry had rushing touchdowns of 19, 20, 23, eight and 11 yards.
Ty McKinney threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Brendyn Carlsen and a 52-yard scoring strike to Keegan Hisler.
Cael Nixon added the final score for the Lynx, on a three-yard run in the second half.
Webster City out gained the Tornadoes 417 yards to 26 in the first half.
Birkey, Roethler combine for 6 TDs
ALGONA -- Bishop Garrigan earned a 63-0 victory over Northwood-Kensett on Friday night.
Cal Birkey reached the end zone three times for the Golden Bears (3-5 overall, 2-4 in district).
Birkey finished with 180 yards on 11 carries. He had rushing touchdowns of 43, two and 67 yards.
Caden Roethler had three touchdowns as well from one, eight and two yards.
Quarterback Garrett Heying was 6-for-8 for 115 yards and three touchdowns.
Heying connected with Jack Grandgenett from 18 out and Andrew Fogarty from six yards.
Grandgenett had two catches for 56 yards and Aidan Hovey had two for 42.
Birkey had 10 tackles and an interception. Justin Bauer and Fogarty had six tackles each.
Heying had five tackles and an interception.
No. 1 Humboldt falls to No. 5 Cubs
NEVADA -- Top-ranked Humboldt suffered its first loss of the season, falling to fifth-ranked Nevada, 16-8 on Friday night.
The Cubs (7-1 overall, 4-0 in district) took a 10-0 lead into the fourth quarter and built a 16-0 lead before the Wildcats (7-1, 3-1) got on the board.
Humboldt's only points came on a 73-yard kickoff return to paydirt from Masen Van Pelt.
Lance Coon finished with 54 yards on 10 carries.
Will Orness had 57 yards passing and 9.5 tackles.
Southeast Valley falls to No. 3 Spirit Lake
GOWRIE -- Southeast Valley's reign as state champion is over, as the Jaguars were topped by No. 3 Spirit Lake here Friday night, 24-6.
The loss officially eliminated Southeast Valley from playoff contention.
Cale Vansickle connected with Eli Johnson for the lone score, hitting his receiver from eight yards out. Drew Corell ran for 39 yards to lead the way on the ground for the Jaguars.
Pocahontas Area picks up win over E-LC
POCAHONTAS -- The Pocahontas Area football team picked up a 26-20 victory over Estherville-LC here Friday night.
The Indians jumped out to an 18-0 lead before holding off the Midgets to improve to 4-4 overall and earn their first district win of the season.
Lucas Kopriva completed 8 of 15 for 81 yards and two scores, while Alex Welander ran for 169 yards on 35 carries and found the end zone twice.
Gabe Ehn and Blake Roberts each caught Kopriva touchdown passes.
On defense, Ryan Panbecker recorded 11 tackles, recovered a fumble and picked off a pass.
