WEST BEND -- The St. Edmond football team rolls into district play feeling as confident as they have in recent years.
The Gaels begin Eight-player, District 2 action this Friday night against West Bend-Mallard.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
In the season opener, St. Edmond (1-0 overall, 0-0 in league) put on a clinic, scoring five touchdowns in the first quarter on its way to a convincing 65-19 victory over Ar-We-Va.
Sophomore Klay Baker found the end zone four times in all, including three trips in the opening nine minutes of the game. Johnny Dickerson caught a pair of TDs from JT Laufersweiler, while Laufersweiler and Caleb Schaeffer each ran in a score.
The Gaels scored on their first four drives against Ar-We-Va, while also recording a defensive touchdown and a safety. Adam Walker had three sacks, ninth-grader Kinnick Henning made seven tackles, and both Baker and John Nemmers picked off passes.
Laufersweiler completed 6 of 9 passing for 134 yards with the two scores, posting a quarterback rating of 191.8. He averaged 22 yards per completion and also ran for 56 yards.
Dickerson caught five passes for 96 yards and the two TDs, Schaeffer ran for 67 yards and caught a 25-yard pass.
St. Edmond had 340 yards of total offense on just 37 plays from scrimmage.
"I thought we really played a well-rounded game," SEHS head coach Matt Dillon said. "Now, we have to be ready for another level of football in West Bend-Mallard.
"They are going to be physical, get after us and really make us earn everything. We have to come ready to go."
West Bend-Mallard (0-1, 0-0) opened its 2022 campaign with a tough 28-14 setback to Newell-Fonda. Max Fehr ran for 157 yards and both touchdowns, while also completing 7 of 18 passes for 77 yards.
Sam Fehr caught three passes. Tyler Banwart, Landon Montag, Lucas Fehr, Mitch Stevens all had a reception.
Montag also ran for 25 yards.
On defense, the Wolverines had five tackles for loss with sacks courtesy Jaxon Zaugg, Ethan Zaugg and Ben Massner. Massner also had a team-high 10 tackles.
"They really gave Newell-Fonda everything they could handle, and that is saying something because Newell-Fonda is one of the top teams in the state," Dillon said. "We didn't match their physical style of play last year and they made us pay."
Last year, West Bend-Mallard came into Dodger Stadium and picked up a 70-26 victory over St. Edmond. Max Fehr accounted for six touchdowns as the Wolverines scored 26 points in the first quarter and had over 360 yards of total offense.
Both Fehr and Montag ran for over 100 yards, as Fehr attempted just one pass.
