Area teams jostling for position

Week 6 of the prep football season will give two Messenger-area teams a chance to sit atop their district standings and two will look to break up a packed list.

Top-ranked Humboldt (5-0 overall, 1-0 Class 3A, District 2) will host fifth-ranked North Polk (4-1, 1-0). Both the Wildcats and North Polk are unbeaten in the district with Nevada (4-1, 1-0).

Webster City (3-2, 1-0) will face LeMars (4-1, 1-0). The two teams, along with Spencer, are tied in the district standings. The Tigers host Fort Dodge on Friday.

With victories the Wildcats and Lynx could create a little separation at the top of the league.

Both South Central Calhoun (3-2, 2-0 Class 1A, District 2) and fourth-ranked Newell-Fonda (5-0, 3-0) will stand tall atop their district alone with victories.

The Titans travel to South Hamilton (4-1, 2-0) and the Mustangs host top-ranked Remsen St. Mary’s (5-0, 3-0).

The Wildcats are coming off a 26-14 victory over Ballard where they gave up their first points of the season after four straight shutouts.

Lance Coon rushed for 229 yards and two touchdowns, coming off a four score game against Boone.

On the season Coon has rushed for 746 yards and nine touchdowns. Since taking over at quarterback, Will Orness has thrown two touchdown passes, run for one and caught one.

Kicker Trever Beach is 4-for-4 on field goal attempts with a long of 35.

The Comets defeated Algona 55-28 last week. Brady Miller ran for 172 yards and three scores with a long of 67 yards. Quarterback Reggie Postel threw for 100 yards and two scores.

On the season Postel is 36-for-51 for 385 yards and five touchdown strikes. On the ground Miller has carried the ball 103 times for 593 yards and nine scores. Hunter Cook has six catches, three of which reached the end zone.

Webster City (3-2, 1-0) at LeMars (4-1, 1-0)

The Lynx are coming off a running clinic where they rushed for 678 yards in a 62-23 victory over Fort Dodge.

Junior Jaxon Cherry ran for 248 yards and six trips to the end zone. CJ Hisler had 218 yards and Ty McKinney had 190 and three touchdowns.

LeMars beat Storm Lake 49-10 behind 271 yards on the ground. Elijah Dougherty had 100 yards and two scores, while Jalas Conner had two scores.

In five games the Lynx have run for 1,772 yards. Cherry has 854 yards and 14 touchdowns. He is averaging 7.9 yards per carry. Hisler has run for 393 yards and McKinney has 293 for five scores.

For the Bulldogs, Teagen Kasel has thrown for 648 yards and five scores. Dougherty has four touchdowns as well as Beau Wadle. Conner has three.

No. 1 Remsen St. Mary’s (5-0, 3-0) at NoNewell-Fonda (5-0, 3-0)

There is a reason the Hawks are ranked No. 1 and that’s because they have a defense that is as potent as their offense.

Remsen St. Mary’s has shut out three straight teams. They are coming off a 63-0 win over St. Edmond and Newell-Fonda knocked off Kingsley-Pierson 48-28.

The Hawks ran for 308 yards. Brenden Fisch had 162 yards and four scores. The Mustangs were paced by a strong all-around performance from Mason Dicks. The senior threw for 244 yards and three scores to go along with 194 yards on the ground and two scores.

On the season Remsen quarterback Cael Ortmann has thrown for 686 and 10 scores along with four rushing touchdowns.

Fisch is the groundhog with 468 and 12 scores.

Dicks has thrown for 746 and 12 scores, while rushing for 383 yards and seven trips to the end zone. Ryan Greenfield (six) and Ty Tauber (three) are the touchdown leaders.

South Central Calhoun (3-2, 2-0) at South Hamilton (4-1, 2-0)

The Titans and Hawks sit atop the Class 1A, District 2 standings and the winner will be all alone.

After two straight losses the Titans have reeled off two straight victories. Last week they topped Eagle Grove 49-14. South Hamilton is coming off a 38-14 win over Woodward-Granger.

Four different Titans reached the end zone. Tyler Lightner and Zach Trott each had a receiving and rushing touchdown. Mike Trott and Brock Nattress also had rushing scores.

For the Hawks Landen Skartvedt rushed for 122 yards and two scores while Noah Gunderson had 106 yards.

For South Central Calhoun, they have thrown for 1,033 yards led by Gavin Batta’s 879 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Titans have rushed for 556 yards. Dominik Kistler has four touchdowns and Nattress has three scores.

NIck Severseike has rushed for 312 yards and two scores. Gunderson has nine touchdowns.

No. 9 Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (4-1, 1-1) at Southeast Valley (2-3, 0-2)

Pocahontas Area (3-2, 0-2) at No. 5 OABCIG (4-1, 1-1)

With three teams in the rankings, the Class 2A, District 2 race will be packed with action each week.

This week ninth-ranked Clarion-Goldfield/Dows will head to defending state champion Southeast Valley.

Pocahontas Area will travel to No. 5 OABCIG.

The Cowboys topped the Indians and the Jaguars fell to Estherville-Lincoln Central.

C-G/D’s has churned the ground up, rushing for 1,253 yards. Preston Gardner has carried the main load, running for 574 yards and five scores. Nevan Foss has 465 yards and 10 scores.

The Jaguars are led by Brady Hanson (195 yards) and Carl Berglund (191).

The Indians have lost two straight games and are looking to get back on track. The Falcons lost to Spirit Lake 28-13.

Pocahontas Area is led by Alex Welander on the ground with 516 yards and four trips to the end zone. Ryan Sommerlot also has four touchdowns.

Beckett DeJean has thrown for 1,007 yards and 12 touchdowns. He has also ran for three scores. Kelton Ladwig and Andrew Parks have five and four touchdowns each.

Gabe Winterrowd has 24 catches for 438 yards and six scores.

Other area games: Gilbert (1-4, 0-1) at Algona (3-2, 0-1); Sioux Central (2-3, 1-1) at Emmetsburg (2-3, 1-1); Manson Northwest Webster (1-4, 1-1) at Eagle Grove (1-4, 0-2); East Sac County (0-5, 0-2) at No. 7 Carroll Kuemper (5-0, 2-0); Greene County (4-1, 2-0) at Red Oak (4-1, 1-1); West Fork (0-5, 0-4) at North Union (3-2, 2-2); West Bend-Mallard (3-2, 3-1) at North Iowa (0-5, 0-4).
