Matt Dillon called it one of the better halves of football he has seen from St. Edmond since taking over the program.
The Gaels scored 21 third quarter points and kept North Iowa out of the end zone over the final 24 minutes of play to secure a 48-18 victory here Friday night inside Dodger Stadium.
JT Laufersweiler accounted for four rushing touchdowns, 134 yards passing and 96 yards rushing, while Kinnick Henning hit paydirt twice and added 56 yards. Klay Baker had 59 yards rushing and a fumble recovery on defense for St. Edmond (2-1 overall, 1-1 in district).
"We didn't really say much at the half," Dillon said. "We just talked about a few little adjustments and making plays. Early on, we just weren't quite getting it done.
"But, the kids continued to play hard and I thought really came out strong in the third. We knew North Iowa wasn't the deepest of teams, so we wanted to wear on them and take advantage."
Laufersweiler directed the Gaels right down the field to being the third, finishing off a quick scoring drive with a 1-yard plunge into the end zone. That gave St. Edmond a 20-18 lead and kick-started a 34-0 run to close the contest.
After forcing a punt, Laufersweiler put together a nine-play scoring drive that ended with another 1-yard TD. On the third possession of the quarter for the Gaels, Henning found the end zone from a yard out.
"We really did a great job running the football," Dillon said. "It's pretty obvious, but when we run the ball, that opens up everything with our offense. When we have to put JT back there and force the pass, we just aren't as successful.
"Our offensive line did a nice job and JT, Klay and Kinnick really ran hard with the ball."
Laufersweiler added his fourth rushing score in the fourth and Caleb Schaeffer sealed it with a pick-6.
The two teams went scoreless over the opening 12 minutes before a flurry of touchdowns to begin the second. North Iowa (0-3, 0-2) started it with a 36-yard TD run by Brogyn Greensky. Jeffery Gerber followed with a 40-yard run to the end zone a minute later.
St. Edmond got on the board on a drive consisting of four Henning runs that took just over a minute. And after forcing a punt, Laufersweiler quickly marched SEHS down the field for the fourth TD in less than six minutes of game action.
"This was one we had to get," Dillon said. "And the kids responded. They have been working very hard and it's a great feeling as a coach to see them get rewarded with a game like this.
"It was the best rushing performance we've had since Kase Baker and Sean Flattery were here. The defense did a great job and we just played well in all aspects of the game."
Johnny Dickerson caught four passes for 84 yards and Schaeffer had two receptions for 50. On defense, Schaeffer and Baker forced turnovers, while Sam Myer had a sack.
Greensky led the Bison, throwing for 117 yards and rushing for 113.
St. Edmond will hit the road the next two weeks, playing at Harris-Lake Park and top-ranked Remsen St. Mary's before returning home on Sept. 30 to host Bishop Garrigan.
Harris-Lake Park (2-1, 1-0) topped Kingsley-Pierson last night, 40-37.
