Humboldt jumped a spot to No. 2 in the Class 3A high school football rankings, The Associated Press announced on Tuesday.

The Wildcats’ defense has been stout in their first two outings, shutting out Webster City (10-0) and Garner-Hayfield (37-0).

Humboldt hits the road to face Estherville-Lincoln Central (1-1) this Friday.

Algona (2-0) moved into the 3A Top 10 for the first time this season. The Bulldogs have wins over Clear Lake (27-16) and Emmetsburg (39-27). They will travel to Garner-Hayfield-Ventura (0-2) on Friday.

Defending Class 2A champion Southeast Valley (2-0) dropped one spot to No. 8 in 2A. The Jaguars have wins over Emmetsburg (28-14) and Interstate-35 (20-7). They will face fellow unbeaten Hampton-Dumont (2-0) on the road next.

Newell-Fonda (2-0) remained fourth in eight-player. The Mustangs own wins over Siouxland Christian (72-0) and West Bend-Mallard (28-14). They will hit the road to face River Valley (0-2) on Friday.

Also receiving votes from the Messenger-area were Greene County (2A), North Union (Class A) and Bishop Garrigan (8-player).
