Humboldt is now the sole No. 1 team in Class 3A following a fourth consecutive shutout this past Friday night.

A week after sharing the top spot with Adel-ADM, the Wildcats received four first place votes and 109 points total. ADM had three first place votes and 105, while Harlan — who topped Humboldt on its way to winning the state title last year — received five first place votes and is third.

Algona dropped from fifth to 10th in 3A, while Clarion-Goldfield/Dows remained 10th in 2A. Southeast Valley dropped out of the 2A Top-10, while Newell-Fonda remains No. 1 in eight-player.

Pleasant Valley replaced Southeast Polk at the top of the 5A poll, Council Bluffs Lewis Central (4A), Williamsburg (2A), Van Meter (1A), West Hancock (A) and Remsen St. Mary’s (eight-player) all remained No. 1s.

Remsen St. Mary’s will host St. Edmond this Friday night. They received eight of the 12 first place votes, with WACO and Don Bosco picking up two each.

Southeast Valley and Greene County are both receiving votes in 2A.

Humboldt has started the year with shutout wins over Webster City (10-0), Garner-Hayfield/Ventura (37-0), Estherville-LC (17-0) and Boone (37-0). The Wildcats will head to Ballard this Friday night.

Will Orness, an all-state wide receiver last year, handled quarterback duties in the win over Boone. He threw for 132 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 131 yards.

Lance Coon also surpassed 100 yards rushing, racking up 122 with four touchdowns. Corey Dettmann caught seven pases for 76 yards and Trever Beach picked off two passes, made all four extra-points and hit a 37-yard field goal.

The Bombers are just 1-3, holding a 41-6 victory over Boone. They fell to Atlantic last week, 15-12, and also lost to Adel-ADM (59-20) and fourth-ranked (4A) Bondurant-Farrar (36-7).

Algona takes on No. 5 North Polk in Alleman as they look to bounce back from a 19-7 loss to Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley. The Bulldogs (3-1) are led by Alex Manske, as the sophomore has accounted for 12 touchdowns and over 1,000 yards passing and running.

Clarion-Goldfield/Dows will meet Pocahontas Area with both trying to get back into the win column following defeats. The Cowboys (3-1) fell to No. 4 Spirit Lake, while the Indians (3-1) were bested by Estherville-LC.

Newell-Fonda (4-0) meets Kingsley-Pierson (1-3), who they have posted wins over in each of the last 12 meetings.

Starting at $4.94/week.
