Hawks too much for St. Edmond

REMSEN — There was a moment here early Friday night where the St. Edmond football team had a chance to make a statement.

The Gaels marched down the field and were closing in on the Remsen St. Mary’s end zone when the top-ranked Hawks buckled down.

Remsen St. Mary’s forced a turnover on downs and proceeded to impose its will, running away with a 63-0 victory on Homecoming.

With the win, the Hawks (5-0 overall) stretched their regular season win streak to 50 in a row. Since the start of the 2019 season, they have gone 38-2, placing second at state while also reaching the semifinals.

All-state running back Brenden Fisch ran for 178 yards and scored four touchdowns, while fellow all-state quarterback Cael Ortmann was a perfect 7-for-7 passing for 177 yards and a pair of TDs to Alex Schroeder.

Fisch, Ortmann and Schroeder are all seniors for Remsen St. Mary’s, who starts a junior and two sophomores along the offensive line. All of them were part of the runner-up team a year ago.

“Listen, they are the real deal,” SEHS head coach Matt Dillon said. “They have it all. Coming in, I didn’t see any weaknesses, and after seeing them up close, I still don’t.

“They are bigger, stronger and faster, and showed that.”

For the Gaels (2-3), Klay Baker had a sack and backup quarterback Ethan Swisher came on to lead a late fourth quarter drive that reached the RSM 4 before the clock ran out.

After the Hawks went down the field to make it 6-0 on their first possession of the game, St. Edmond did the exact same. JT Laufersweiler hit Johnny Dickerson on a big 26-yard play and Baker was able to gain traction running the football.

However, a loss of five yards on first-and-goal from the 2 put the Gaels on their heels, and Baker was stopped on fourth-and-goal from the 1. Remsen St. Mary’s scored four players later and were off to the races.

Baker ran for 13 yards, Kinnick Henning and Laufersweiler each ran for 11, and Drake Vandi five. Laufersweiler completed 4 of 17 with two interceptions for 54 yards, as Dominic McClain caught a 12-yard pass, Jakob Koopman a 10-yard pass and Baker a 6-yard pass.

“We did some good things, but against a team like that, you have to be making the plays all game long and we didn’t do that,” Dillon said. “We had kids in position to make tackles, and they didn’t. We had kids in position to make plays, and we didn’t. Those are things we just can’t do and expect to win.”

Along with his 177 yards passing, Ortman also ran for 43 yards, while Schroeder added a rushing touchdown to his two receiving scores, finishing with three receptions for 76 yards and three rushes for 50.

Ryan Willman, another senior, caught two passes for 79 yards. Keaton Harpenau and Schroeder each had an interception, while Braxton Kniep recorded a sack.

Remsen St. Mary’s will now turn its attention to a district showdown with fourth-ranked Newell-Fonda in Newell next week. The Gaels also are back in district play, hosting long-time rival Bishop Garrigan for Homecoming at Dodger Stadium.

“We have a three-game season left and a chance to still make the playoffs,” Dillon said. “We’ve got to come out and get ready for Garrigan on Friday.”
