Fort Dodge at Spencer for district clash

SPENCER — Still licking their wounds from last week’s physical encounter with defending district champion Webster City, the Fort Dodge football team is in for another stern test on Friday night at Spencer.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Dodgers (2-3 overall, 0-1 in Class 4A, District 1) make the 100-mile trip to northwest Iowa and take on a Tiger squad riding a four-game winning streak. Following a season-opening loss to No. 3 (Class 2A) Spirit Lake, Spencer (4-1, 1-0) has defeated Mason City, Sioux City Heelan, Sioux Center and Denison-Schleswig in consecutive fashion by a combined 68 points.

“They’re just a really solid football team again this year,” FDSH head coach Nik Moser said. “They don’t really do anything flashy, but they’re confident in their system and they execute at a consistently high level.

“We’ll have our hands full. We’re pretty banged up (on the injury front) for the first time this season, so we’re doing some shuffling and have a few different looks on both sides of the ball.”

The Tigers are similar to the Lynx in their throwback ground attack. Spencer’s triple option is led by one of 4A’s leading rushers, junior Adrian Carrillo, who has accumulated 680 yards at 5.8 yards per carry.

On the year, head coach Jim Tighe’s squad has 265 carries and just 27 pass attempts.

“It’s no secret what they want to do,” Moser said. “Stopping it is an entirely different challenge. Carrillo is very good, and (Kaleb) Cline and (Logan) Huckfelt are two of the better linemen in 4A.”

Cline — a University of Northern Iowa recruit — is 6-feet, 5-inches tall and 241 pounds. Huckfelt is 6-2 and 260 and a returning first team all-district performer.

Defensive back Campbell Wessels was also first team all-4A-1 in 2021. Riley DeWitt and Gavin Timmer were second teamers a year ago for Spencer, which went 7-2 overall.

Fort Dodge struggled against the run last week, and standout defensive end Kaleb Lynch will miss Friday’s contest with an injury he suffered against Webster City.

Senior Connor Carver threw for 200 yards, but the Dodgers were never able to get their ground game going to balance out the offense.

“We had a good week of practice,” Moser said. “We still have a lot of work to do, but we have to keep moving forward together both physically and mentally. You have to be ready to match the intensity of your opponent in this district.”

Carver, a Bemidji State University recruit, is third in 4A for passing touchdowns, total touchdowns and completions. Fellow senior Javion Jondle, an Iowa Central commit, ranks first in receptions and fifth in receiving yards.
