A NEW NO. 1

Humboldt reaches top spot in 3A alongside ADM

Fresh off a third consecutive shutout to begin the season, the Humboldt football team finds themselves sitting atop the Class 3A poll.

Head coach Derrick Elman’s Wildcats received two first-place votes and share that billing with Adel-ADM, which had four. Both teams have accumulated 98 poll points, with No. 3 Harlan getting five first-place votes.

Southeast Polk (5A), Council Bluffs Lewis Central (4A), Williamsburg (2A), West Hancock (A) and Remsen St. Mary’s (eight-player) are all ranked first once again, with Van Meter replacing West Sioux atop the 1A poll.

Humboldt, which made a run to the state semifinals a year ago, hosts Boone this Friday night. The Wildcats have not allowed a point in consecutive wins over Webster City, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura and Estherville-Lincoln Central to open the 2022 campaign.

Senior Owen Hubbell is among the leaders on defense, recording 3.5 sacks, nine tackles for loss and an interception. Classmate Tayeton Lohaus has four tackles for loss.

Humboldt has forced four turnovers.

Algona is ranked fifth in 3A, climbing five spots after a 34-7 win this past week to move to 3-0. The Bulldogs will face Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley (1-2), who has dropped games to Western Christian and second-ranked (2A) Central Lyon/George-Little Rock.

Sophomore Alex Manske has stepped in for his brother, Tyler Manske, and has thrown for 719 yards, ran for 229 and accounted for 12 touchdowns. Porter Reffer has 10 receptions for 354 yards and four scores with another 131 yards rushing.

Clarion-Goldfield/Dows and Pocahontas Area are tied for 10th in 2A with Red Oak, as both moved into the rankings. The Cowboys (3-0) head to Estherville-LC, while the Indians (3-0) host No. 5 Spirit Lake in district games.

Preston Gardner directs the C-G/D offense, racking up over 500 yards of total offense and four touchdowns. Alex Welander has 391 yards rushing and four TDs, while Lucas Kopriva has rushed for 204 with two scores for Pocahontas Area.

Newell-Fonda remains fourth in the eight-player Top-10, with West Bend-Mallard receiving a vote. The Mustangs (3-0) host Bishop Garrigan and the Wolverines welcome in Northwood-Kensett in league battles.

For Newell-Fonda, Mason Dicks has 396 yards passing and eight scores with Ryan Greenfield adding 202 yards receiving, 159 yards rushing and six TDs.
