SCC's Batta throws for over 300 yards
LAKE CITY -- Gavin Batta and South Central Calhoun put on an aerial performance here Friday night against East Sac County.
Batta threw for 308 yards with four touchdowns as the Titans topped the Raiders, 48-7.
The junior returning starter completed 13 of 21 passes without an interception, as classmate Keegan Soard caught five passes for 158 yards and two scores. Brock Nattress, another junior, and senior Jordan Moreno each hauled in TD passes, as senior Chance Roeder tossed a 65-yard touchdown strike to Moreno.
Batta hit Nattress for the first score of the game from 59 yards out, adding a TD run later in the quarter. He started the second by hitting Soard on an 89-yard pass.
Nattress found the end zone on a run to make it 28-0 at halftime.
On defense, South Central Calhoun held East Sac County to 118 yards of total offense.
Golden Bears run for 307 yards
ALGONA -- Bishop Garrigan ran wild on Janesville in their season opener on Friday.
The Golden Bears (1-0 overall) rushed for six touchdowns on the way to a 52-6 victory.
Bishop Garrigan ran for 307 yards, led by Cal Birkey's 138 yard performance on eight carries.
Birkey ran for three touchdowns with a long of 62.
Caden Roethler had a one-yard touchdown.
Owen Murphy (31 yards), Trayton Cink (9) and Caden Roethler (1) had rushing touchdowns.
Roethler had 52 yards on 10 carries. Garrett Heying carried the ball eight times for 52 yards.
Heying returned an interception 10 yards for a touchdown.
Justin Bauer and Heying led the defense with six and five touchdowns respectively.
Jaguars win on the road
TRURO -- Defending state champion Southeast Valley earned a 20-7 victory over Interstate-35.
Brady Hanson led the Jaguars (1-0 overall) rushing attack with 75 yards on 18 carries.
Hanson had a two and four yard touchdown.
Carl Berglund had the other score from five yards out.
Indians silence MNW
POCAHONTAS -- The Pocahontas Area football team pitched a shutout, besting Twin Lakes Conference rival Manson Northwest Webster here Friday night, 38-0.
The Indians jumped out to a 10-0 lead, adding another score in the second. They found the end zone again in the third and tagged on 12 more points in the fourth and final quarter to secure the win in the season opener for both.
Pocahontas Area has now won each of the past five meetings with the Cougars, including back-to-back shutouts.
Newell-Fonda tips WB-M
WEST BEND -- Newell-Fonda used a late touchdown to hold off West Bend-Mallard here Friday night, 28-14.
The Mustangs held a 14-6 advantage at the half and led 20-14 going into the fourth and final quarter.
For the Wolverines, Max Fehr ran for 152 yards and scored two touchdowns, adding 77 yards in the air. Ben Massner had 10 tackles on defense.
Cowboys roll
CLARION -- The Clarion-Goldfield/Dows football team opened the season with a 48-20 victory over Eagle Grove here Friday night.
The Cowboys have now won each of the past five meetings between the former North Central Conference rivals and are 10-5 in the last 15.
