Courtney Darrow wanted to see her Newell-Fonda softball team finish the week off strong.

And that is exactly what the Mustangs did here Wednesday afternoon at Rogers Park.

After losing in the Class 1A quarterfinals on Tuesday night, No. 2 Newell-Fonda bounced back with a 7-1 victory in the consolation round over third-ranked Lisbon.

Kierra Jungers struck out 12 and allowed just four hits with a walk, while Anna Bellcock was 3-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored.

Bellcock and Macy Sievers, who scored two runs, are the lone seniors on the roster for Newell-Fonda.

“We wanted to end on a high note and send Anna and Macy out with a win in their final games as a Mustang,” said Darrow, a Fort Dodge Senior High graduate who is now 130-19 in her career at Newell-Fonda. “For the girls coming back, this is a tremendous way to get them excited for the future.”

Mia Walker had two hits, scored a run and drove in another, while McKenna Severs also had an RBI and scored a run.

Emma Erickson crossed home plate for the Mustangs, who finished the year 36-5 overall and won the Twin Lakes Conference title.

Lisbon struck first with a run in the opening inning, but Newell-Fonda answered with three in the home half. They scored another in the fourth and finished it off with three in the sixth.

Starting at $4.94/week.
