CEDAR RAPIDS — TJ Schnurr and John Joyce recently took part in an international trip as members of the Coe College men’s basketball team.

Schnurr and Joyce, Bishop Garrigan graduates, spent over a week in Costa Rica during the month of May with their teammates and coaches.

The Kohawks played three exhibition games agaisnt teams during the adventure while also conducting a camp and exploring the incredible scenery.

Schnurr, Joyce and the rest of those on the trip first stopped in San Jose, the capital city of Costa Rica. They spent three days there before heading to the rainforest-surrounded city of San Carlos. The final four days were in the province of Guanacaste.

“We put on a kids basketball camp in San Carlos which was awesome,” Schnurr said. “We went to the beach to hang out, went zip-lining over the jungle and hiked through the rainforest to see waterfalls.”

During the trip, they played games against Costa Rica’s LBS league teams including the reigning champions, Escazu. Coe went 2-1 in the games.

“It was a super fun environment,” Joyce said. “Actually, a lot of local people showed up to the three games that we played.”

Schnurr, a 6-foot-6 junior forward, scored 94 pointst with 60 rebounds this past year for the Kohawks. Joyce, a 6-1 sophomore guard, saw action in eight games, scoring four points.

Coe is coached by Bryan Martin, who took over the program in 2012-13 after four years as the associate head coach at North Dakota. Martin has over 100 career wins at Coe and is also a former North Iowa Area and Indian Hills head coach.

The Kohawks went 20-7 a year ago and posted an 11-5 record in the American Rivers Conference.
