Dickerson named new Triton coach

Sabah Dickerson has been named the new head women’s basketball coach at Iowa Central.

Dickerson, an assistant for the past four years, replaces Brian Ortmeier, who was hired as the Briar Cliff University head women’s basketball coach earlier this year.

Along with serving under Ortmeier for two seasons, one of which was highlighted by an appearance at the NJCAA Div. II National Tournament, Dickerson also worked with Kelly Kruger for two years.

“Sabah did a wonderful job under both Coach Kruger and Coach Ortmeier,” said Kevin Twait, Director of Athletics at Iowa Central. “She was the glue that held the squad together and made the transition between the two coaches seamless.

“She has an incredible energy for recruiting and is a very mature young lady who will be a dynamic leader for our women’s basketball program.”

Dickerson attended Campbell University where she was part of the track and field program. She earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from the school before earning her Master of Administration from Upper Iowa.

“Iowa Central is a special place filled with tremendous people,” Dickerson said. “I knew it when I stepped on campus four years ago and I am absolutely honored to be the next ead coach at Iowa Central.

“I would like to thank my college coach, Wanda Watkins, and my former head coaches, Kelly Kruger and Brian Ortmeier. They have taught me many lessons about life, people and basketball.”

Along with coaching the Tritons, Dickerson was also on the staff at Upper Iowa for both women’s basketball and women’s lacrosse, and Campbell as a team manager.

Iowa Central went 24-8 overall last year and 13-7 in the ICCAC. Third-team all-conference selection Jayden Frank and Emma Scurek are among those set to return.

“We have a terrific group of women coming to campus this fall,” Dickerson said. “They are academically sound, competitive and are going to be strong ambassadors of Triton nation. We are excited to go to work.”
