Quinten McCarville has learned to embrace the St. Edmond motto of “Play Like A Champion Today.”

McCarville, a multi-sport senior standout for the Gaels, believes that has given him the push to “perform 100 percent no matter what.”

“It has taught me to play with passion, pride and sportsmanship,” McCarville said. “It motivates me to perform to the best of my ability.”

Currently, McCarville is looking to continue his strong spring in the high jump for the SEHS track and field program. He has cleared 6-feet and earned a handful of meet titles, while also running the 110 and 400 hurdles and the shuttle hurdle relay.

This past fall, McCarville helped the Gael football team transition to eight-player. He led the team with 32 receptions for 471 yards and seven touchdowns, while also recording 36 tackles with an interception on defense.

During the winter, McCarville scored 183 points with 111 rebounds, 46 assists and 28 steals for the St. Edmond basketball team.

Being active allowed McCarville to develop strong bonds and relationships with his classmates.

“My friends mean everything to me,” he said. “They have taught me not just things about sports, but life in general. Being able to play sports I love with them, having those moments are ones I shouldn’t take for granted.

“I have seen my friends adapt a ton as athletes, so to see them succeed in sports, it’s pretty amazing knowing you started from the bottom with them.”

McCarville is also one of five finalists for the Terry Griffey Award, which goes to the top male senior student-athlete at St. Edmond.

“I hope to be remembered by the effort I gave in all my sports,” he said. “Every game, I worked to my fullest and I performed to the best of my ability. It’s the effort that gets you recognition, and I tried very hard at that.

“Being doubted is a struggle for many and can make them lose confidence. But for some people, they can use that and become more confident and better. Those are the kind of people I look up to.”

McCarville plans to attend Iowa Central in the fall and enroll in the electrical program before transferring to the University of Iowa to complete his studies in business.
