Dodgers compete at Blue Oval

DES MOINES — A trio of Fort Dodge athletes competed in the opening session of the Class 4A state track and field meet here Thursday inside Drake Stadium.

Jon Astor, Aliyah Henry and Mackenzie McIlrath were in action during the field events for the Dodgers.

Astor, a senior, placed 15th in the discus. The future Iowa Central thrower broke his personal-best throw with a toss of 151-08 on his second attempt of the first flight.

Walker Whalen of Waukee won the event with a state-record throw of 204-09. Corey Phillips of Ames, who won the district title over Astor at Dodger Stadium, was second, also breaking the old state mark with a throw of 195-10.

Astor added a throw of 131-05 while fouling on his third attempt.

“I had a great day,” Astor said. “I got lucky with great weather and I am very happy to end my year on a PR.”

Henry placed 20th in the discus, as the Dodger junior had a throw of 97-09 on her third and final attempt. She also had a foul and a toss of 97-07.

Waukee’s Alex Buscher was the event winner with a throw of 132-05.

McIlrath, a sophomore, cleared 4-foot-10 in the high jump on her third and final attempt, but was unable to get past 5-foot. Waukee’s Josie Moreland won the gold at 5-6.5.

Fort Dodge’s Connor Carver and Lainey Maehl will compete on Friday. Carver is qualified in the 110-meter hurdles and Maehl the shot put. On Saturday, Angel Gervacio competes in the 100-meter wheelchair race.
