Area wrestlers hungry for more

CORALVILLE — Maria Elizondo tested the wrestling waters last season and finished fourth at the state tournament.

“Going into this year having a foundation allowed me to grow in my skills,” Elizondo said. “Learning new things and improving on the basics certainly had a great impact.”

In her final season of wrestling for Humboldt, the senior finds herself in a familiar spot and has high hopes for a lot more.

In Friday’s opening round of the IWCOA tournament Elizondo (16-1) recorded two falls. She pinned Waukon’s Kloe Hemmersbach in 2:37.

In the third round, she knocked off MOC-Floyd Valley’s Addaly Miller by fall in 1:39.

In Saturday morning’s quarterfinals, Elizondo will face eighth-ranked Katie Schlosser (18-1) of Colfax-Mingo.

The other quarterfinal in Elionzondo’s side of the bracket is top-ranked Naomi Simon (22-0) of Decorah and No. 5 Leah Grimm of Osage (17-4).

“Going into the quarterfinals is something that I’m excited for,” Elizondo said. “Having the feeling of my teammates there knowing that they’re cheering me on, lights a fire in me to keep going.

“The quarterfinals is going to be fun and wanting to make it to the finals is the goal. Having the championship at my fingertips seems amazing. Just knowing that the opportunity is there…I’ve never been more ready.”

With 11 girls in the field, Humboldt is 17th in the team standings with 45 points.

Brett Harklau (11-5) picked up three wins at 120 pounds. She won on the championship side by pin and earned two consolation falls before losing.

Baylie Beers (17-5) won two matches by fall on the championship side at 125 pounds before being knocked out on the consolation side.

Claire Weydert (12-10) won her first match at 130 by fall before losing in the second round. She picked up a fall on the consolation side before losing via pin.

Also at 130 pounds, Adalynn Lawman (7-9) earned two wins. She had two straight falls on the consolation side, before losing out on a tight 10-7 decision.

Ava McIntire (6-9) placed sixth in the 120-pound silver bracket. McIntire won three consolation matches by fall.

Seventh-ranked Rylee Coyle (4-3) will start her tournament in the 285 pound quarterfinals. Coyle will meet third-ranked Ava Thompson (13-3) of Charles City.

Algona

Sophie Degner picked up three falls at 155 pounds to advance to the quarterfinals for the Bulldogs.

Degner pinned Harper Griffin of Marion (:45), Western Dubuque’s Josie Jecklin (2:45) and AGWSR’s Rory Siems (1:33).

Ryan Haynes (130) recorded three victories and is still alive for a medal. Haynes pinned Elizabeth Thomas of Pella (1:00) and Osage’s Annaliese Arciniega (1:56) on the championship side. She lost in the third, but bounced back with a consolation fall.

Malyn Davis (110) took wins on the championship side before losing two straight. She had falls in 3:41 and 1:06.

Megan McPeak (125) won two consolation matches in 29 seconds and 5:09 before being ousted.

South Central Calhoun

Eighth-ranked Evelyn Kramer (22-3) still has her sights set on a state title.

Kramer pinned Faith Cooper of Waukon (1:27) after a first round bye and advanced to the quarters with a fall over North Union’s Harley Tobin (4:24).

Delanie Westcott (16-7) picked up two wins at 125 pounds. She won her opener by medical forfeit and had a consolation fall before being eliminated.

Pocahontas Area

Kaitlynn Schuler (9-2) won four matches on the day, including the opening round at 110 pounds. She lost in the second round before advancing by fall, decision and fall to stay alive for a chance at a medal.

Webster City

Madison Pulis (7-5) earned three wins at 170 pounds for the Lynx. Pulis recorded a 14 second fall on the championship side before losing in the second round.

Pulis had a fall and a decision in consolations, before being ousted.

East Sac County

Olivia Villegas (13-4) reeled off three straight consolation victories after losing in the second round.

Villegas won her opening match at 125 pounds by fall over Dubuque Whalert’s Caroline Slaght (1:45). She lost 9-1 to third-ranked Rylee Vercande of Williamsburg in the second round.

She kept her spot in the field with 9-2, 6-3 and 6-5 decisions.

North Union

Harley Tobin (11-2) is still alive for a medal at 110 pounds. Tobin won her first match by fall before losing in the third round. She won a tight 3-2 decision in the fourth round on the consolation side to stay alive.
