The St. Edmond wrestling team waited for the final match of the night to highlight one of its seniors.
The Gaels honored all three of their future graduates on Senior Night, but Elly Berry earned the final recognition — and the loudest applause.
Tyler Rosmanith and Grant Webster joined Berry as senior winners for the Gaels in the triangular.
St. Edmond lost the opening dual to Clarion-Goldfield/Dows, 66-15, then fell to Humboldt 69-12.
With the Gael girls basketball team on the road in Jewell, the twoi programs decided to hold the match at the end so Berry’s fellow athletes could get back to town and watch her match.
The state qualifier didn’t disappoint, earning a fall in 1:54 over Claire Weydert of Humboldt and sending the crowd into a frenzy.
“She has so many friends on the basketball team, so we thought it would be special if they could make it back,” said SEHS head coach Eugene Carlson. “That was a pretty amazing sound to hear after she earned the fall.
“She’s meant a lot to this program and deserved it.”
Rossmanith got an ovation as well after his fall over Gaige Allen in 4:17 at 170 pounds. Adam Walker picked up a forfeit victory.
“That was a huge win for (Rossmanith),” Carlson said. “He was a little banged up and he got the OK from the trainer and his mom, so it was nice to see him get a win.”
Webster earned an injury default win at 182 pounds against the Cowboys.
“These seniors have been here since seventh grade and have put a lot into this program,” Carlson said. “They have been through a lot and have been working hard, so every small success is key to growth.”
Owen Mayall (113), Dusty Pate (132), Jase Goodell (138), Ty Gargano (145), Landon Halverson (160) and Christian Alcala (182) picked up victories for Humboldt.
Gael junior Ronnie Orres (113) earned a fall in 1:49 over Rigo Bobadilla.
Freshman Sam Myer notched a tight 8-7 decision over Caleb Seaba at 132 pounds.
“It was nice to see Ronnie come out and get the fall,” Carlson said. “Myer has a lot of untapped potential. He is a strong kid and earned a tight win.”
Earning victories by fall for the Cowboys were Cale Kirstein (138), Jackson Beisel (145), Garrett Seba (160), Mack Seaba (170) and Nash Lienemann (195).
Tanner McKimmey sealed a 46-30 victory for Humboldt over the Cowboys in the middle dual.
McKimmey pinned Mason Allen in five minutes of the 220-pound match.
“Tanner has been doing a great job and is starting to get healthy after recovering from some football injuries,” said Humboldt head coach Chad Beaman. “Ty (Gargano) turned a match around that he had lost before and we closed the gap in some matches against them (Cowboys).”
Earning wins for the Wildcats were Cyler Cirks (106), DJ Muir (120), Jayden Gargano (126), Pate, Jase Goodell (138), Ty Gargano, Joe Weydert (152), Alcala, and McKimmey.
Winning for the Cowboys were Rigo Bobadilla (113), Garrett and Mack Seaba, Lienemann and Daniel Chavez.
The Gaels are back in action on Saturday when they travel to the Emmetsburg Invitational.
