No. 8 Iowa Central rolls past No. 21 Lakers

The eighth-ranked Iowa Central wrestling team finished off the first semester of action with a convincing 36-14 victory over No. 21 Iowa Lakes here Thursday night inside Hodges Fieldhouse.

Lane Cowell, Hayden Halter, Darnai Heard, Nolan Miller-Johnston, Kody Cook, Jesus Gutierrez and Jorden Pryor were all victorious for the Tritons (2-1 overall, 2-1 in ICCAC), who are now off until January.

“It was a good way to put a cap here on the first half of the season,” Iowa Central head coach Luke Moffitt said. “We still have a long way to go before nationals, but I thought we showed improvement from our last dual action. We still have to learn how to wrestle through an entire match.”

Cowell, ranked fourth now at 125 pounds, started things off with a quick fall in the first period over Nolan Johnson. The former Fort Dodge Senior High standout had a takedown and moved into position to finish the match in 1:53.

Halter, the No. 5 rated 133-pounder, picked up a forfeit to give Iowa Central a quick 12-0 lead.

The Lakers scored a fall from Dontario Norwood at 141 pounds before the Tritons reeled off a pair of major decisions from Darnai Heard and Nolan Miller-Johnston. Kody Cook, another FDSH grad, claimed a first period fall over Nicholas Knight at 165.

“Lane and Kody really had good matches,” Moffitt said. “It’s nice to be able to compete at home, and really nice to see them put together great matches in front of their family and friends.”

Gutierrez collected a forfeit to make it 32-6 as Iowa Lakes earned major decisions by John Colbourne and Massoma Endene. Pryor, ranked No. 1 at heavyweight ended the dual with a major decision over ninth-rated Jacob Rahn.

The Tritons finished the night with 20 takedowns to 11 by the Lakers.
