Gaels notch three wins in NCC triangular

ALGONA — The St. Edmond wrestling team opened their season here Thursday night with a triangular against Algona and Webster City.

Ronnie Orres had a win for the Gaels, besting Webster City’s Tristan Mason in overtime, 6-4.

Andee Barwin and Elly Berry each picked up wins in the dual with Algona. Barwin pinned Eliza Schultz in 1:31 and Berry pinned Regan Nicholson in 50 seconds.

“It was a good win for Ronnie and he had a really good match against the Algona kid who was a state placewinner last year,” SEHS head coach Eugene Carlson said. “We just have to keep showing improvement. I feel like a couple of fixes here and there will result in more wins for us.

“And it was great to see both Andee and Elly get wins.”

The Lynx won the dual, 66-3, behind wins from Addison Scott, Carson Doolittle, two-time state champion Camron Phetxoumphone, Cole Reiling, Luke Estlund, Austin Mason, Brady Jessen, Evan Estlund, Skyler Scott, Dylan Burnette, Jaxon Cherry and Landon Griffin.

Algona scored a 78-0 victory vs. St. Edmond with wins from Isaac Wilson, Elijah Wilhite, Jacob Zabka, Tate Slagle, Ian Fehr, Hunter Penton, Luke Carter, Brandon Harris, Colby Jennings, Jagger O’Neall, Sammel Reitz, Chase Roof, Cohen Reffer and Cody Nielson.

Webster City topped Algona, 46-26, with wins from Estlund, Jessen, Estlund, Burnette, Cherry, Griffin, Doolittle, Deion Vangkham and Phetxoumphone. Algona’s Carter, Harris, O’Neall, Wilson and Slagle had victories.

The Gaels return to action on Saturday in Manson at the Doug Wood Invitational. The tournament begins at 10 a.m.
