Gael boys can’t catch C-G/D

CLARION — The St. Edmond boys put together a strong fourth quarter here Friday night, but it wasn’t enough to top Clarion-Goldfield/Dows, 70-61.

Hayden Mayer scored 20 points and Jackson Palmer added 18 to lead the Gaels.

For the Cowboys, Connor State had 18 and Coady Olson 16, with Jaxon Carpenter adding 15.

“They caught us flat-footed there in the first,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “They took it right to us, but we battled and I was proud of them for that.

“It would have been easy to give up, but they fought until the end.”

Clarion-Goldfield/Dows (2-0 overall) led 23-10 after the first quarter and maintained a 13-point edge at the half.

Jacob Moore scored seven points with Tyson Berning chipping in six. Both Nevan Foss and Landon Olson had four.

St. Edmond (1-1) got points from Caleb Schaeffer (eight), Noah Simpson (six), Zach Smith (four), Sam Mericle (two) and Quinten McCarville (two).

Next action for the Gaels will be Tuesday when they host Southeast Valley.
