Tritons swimmers shine at Morningside

SIOUX CITY — The Iowa Central swim team had a strong showing here this past weekend at the Morningside Invitational.

The Tritons finished atop both the men’s and women’s standings, besting Midland on the men’s side and Morningside on the women’s for gold.

Iowa Central also swept the relay races during the two-day meet.

“I’m really proud of the whole team and how they performed,” head coach Joe Plane said. “It’s a challenging meet with a lot of events and no warm up or cool down space.

“Winning every relay speaks very highly for how well-rounded this team is.”

Nine events broke pool records including Kyle McKenzie and Maria Goncalves, who each set two new records.

McKenzie broke the 400 IM mark at 4:05.33 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:05.35. Goncalves set bests in the 200 back (2:10.44) and 100 back (59.60). Both times rank her second in school history.

Jonathon Turner broke the 100 IM mark at 52.90.

The 400 medley relay of Gavin Hall, McKenzie, Turner and Sam Brennan turned in a 3:30.23 for the pool record and rank ninth in school history; Brennan, McKenzie, Brady Ferguson and Pedro Aragon broke the 800 free relay record in 7:09.16 and rank ninth in program history; Gonvalves, Leticia Dias, Andrea Gallardo Perez and Nancy Olson set the 400 medley relay pool record in 4:09.73 and rank eighth; and Gonvalves, Olson, Emily Small and Dias set the 400 free relay mark in 3:46.64.

Iowa Central heads to Sioux Falls on Thursday for the Augustana Invitational.
