Tritons 4th at national volleyball

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Iowa Central volleyball team finished off the best two-year run in program history by placing fourth here Saturday night at the NJCAA Div. II Championships.

The Tritons fell to Johnson County in the third place match in five sets. Scores were 17-25, 24-26, 25-19, 25-20 and 15-5.

In the spring, Iowa Central also advanced to the tournament semifinals before placing a program-best third. With several of those key players back in the fall, the Tritons earned their fourth consecutive ICCAC Div. II regular season title and a second straight regional championship.

Katilyn Steffes recorded 14 kills with 14 digs and four serving aces to lead the way for Iowa Central. Angel Baylark had nine kills, Haley Alharithy six and both Brooke Dobson and Jori Hajek five.

Alesha Johnson recorded 39 assists with nine digs and three kills, Hajek added 12 digs, Baylyn Johnson 18 and Bailey Dugan 13.

Both Bria Sandifer and Baylyn Johnson had two serving aces, with Sandifer adding two digs.

Baylark made the all-tournament team for the Tritons.

Parkland, who knocked off the Tritons in the semifinals, upset No. 1 Cowley for the national title.
