Tritons push streak to 34 straight

The top-ranked Iowa Central volleyball team claimed two more wins here Friday, setting the stage for a showdown with Cowley County on Saturday.

With wins over North Iowa Area and Carl Sandburg inside Hodges Fieldhouse, the Tritons improved to 34-0 on the year. They will face second-ranked Cowley on Saturday at 11:15 a.m. before finishing the Triton Invitational with Central-Columbus at 1 p.m.

Brooke Dobson had 10 kills, Haley Alharithy eight and Angel Baylark seven for Iowa Central vs. the Trojans. Jori Hajek added six kills and 14 digs, Alesha Johnson had 36 assists and five digs, and Baylyn Johnson 10 digs.

“We started the day off with NIACC, who we’ve played twice already including an August scrimmage,” Iowa Central head coach Sara Horn said. “They came out in a different lineup, so I thought we did a good job of adjusting to those changes. Alesha did a good job of spreading the ball and we had a good balanced offense.”

Baylark also had four block assists and a solo block, with Alharithy adding three block assists. Alesha Johnson and Bailey Dugan recorded three aces each.

Katilyn Steffes had 20 kills vs. Carl Sandburg with 12 digs, Dobson and Baylark each had 10 kills, and Baylyn Johnson 27 digs. Alharithy, Dobson and Hajek each had four block assists with Alesha Johnson recording 43 assists.

“Against Carl Sandburg, they did a really good job of taking away some of our shots, so it took us a little adjusting in the middle two sets to find their open spots. We finally pulled together and picked up our offense. Our block was great against Carl Sandburg and that will be an important factor against Cowley, so it was great to see.

“Our October tournament is always a great time to face some challenging teams while starting to move our focus to the postseason,” Horn said.

We know what our strengths and weaknesses are at this point, so (Saturday’s) matchups will be an important test to show what we’ve been working on.”
