The Predicament is closing up shop

An Iowa wrestling institution is ceasing operation, as The Predicament announced on Tuesday it will no longer publish after over 50 years of tracking the sport.

The family of owner G. Wyatt Schultz released a statement on social media that “the website will be discontinued after the end of October.” Schultz died unexpectedly in August at the age of 68.

“His final wishes regarding the publication were that it would cease if something were to happen to him,” said Kirsten Dralle Schultz, Wyatt’s wife, in the release.

Schultz was living in Cedar Rapids at the time of his death. He also farmed in the Castalia, Waukon and Frankville areas.

Schultz owned The Predicament, which was wrestling website and news outlet since 1970. On its site, The Predicament identifies itself as “your ultimate source in Iowa wrestling … articles, rankings, results, and premium content.”

Schultz was an Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Dan McCool Media Award winner, and a recent Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame honoree. He received the Russ Smith Community Impact Award from National Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum, the IHSAA News Media Award, the National Wrestling Media Association Photographer of the Year award, and their Publication of the Year Award.

“Wyatt was the final owner (of The Predicament), and his support and love for the young people and the many families and individuals involved in Iowa amateur wrestling was ever present. His contributions and influence went far beyond the wrestling mat… building The Predicament ‘brand’ was at the bottom of his priorities; building up the kids and relationships was at the top,” Kirsten Schultz said. “Wyatt’s ever present smile and joy in life and living will long be fondly remembered. Stories will be told and the laughter will be the best part!

“Wyatt would want things to continue to move forward! His favorite moniker was, ‘Let’s Keep Wrestling on the Move!!!'”

A native of Postville, Schultz graduated from Postville High School and North Iowa Area Community College.
