Dodgers storm back with victory

Fort Dodge blanks Tornadoes in first meeting since 1927

STORM LAKE — Fort Dodge got in and got out here Friday, plugging the holes from a two-week drought with a transient visit to Storm Lake.

The Dodgers secured a winning season with a 42-0 victory over the outmanned Tornadoes in a game that lasted only an hour and 40 minutes.

The visitors scored on all but one first-half possession in building a five-touchdown lead by halftime and assuring the third quarter would start with a continuous clock. FDSH reserves saw plenty of action the rest of the way, as the team put the finishing touches on its first District 1 victory while improving to 5-2 overall on the year.

A depleted Storm Lake squad, meanwhile, fell to 0-7. This was the first football game between Fort Dodge and the Tornadoes since 1927.

“We just wanted to get the job done, play as many guys as we could and avoid injuries,” Dodger head coach Nik Moser said. “There are hopefully bigger and better things ahead for us, but we knew we had to take care of business (last night) first. So we cleared some of the haze from the last two games and are moving back in the right direction again.”

Junior Javion Jondle provided plenty of fireworks, getting Fort Dodge off to an auspicious start immediately by returning the opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown. Jondle later added a 69-yard TD reception from classmate Connor Carver on a slant route across the middle of the field.

The Dodgers had 255 yards and a 35-0 advantage by the time the first half came to an end. Carver had found Jondle and his brother — Amaris Harris — for scoring strikes, while scrambling for a four-yard touchdown run of his own. The Harris pass, on a jet sweep pitch, covered 39 yards.

Senior tailback Jon Presswood, who also hit paydirt in the first half, carried 10 times for 93 yards. Carver accumulated 185 passing yards before the break.

Fullback Jace Ulrich scored the first touchdown on his career on a 15-yard rumble to start the second half. Fort Dodge then inserted its junior varsity lineup for the final 19 minutes, which went quickly without any stoppages due to the 35-point rule.

Junior Tucker Pederson intercepted a pass for the Dodger defense, which surrendered only 79 total yards and six first downs. The first string allowed just 34 yards.

Storm Lake was starting its fourth different quarterback this season in senior Beau Boeckman. When he left with an injury — suffered while playing defense — the Tornadoes turned to sophomore Ashton Khamphavong.

The Storm Lake program had its senior night for the 10 remaining 12th-graders on the roster. There are only 10 juniors on the squad as well.

Junior Kadin Nekvinda had a sack in the second half for Fort Dodge. Sophomore quarterback Ty Adams also saw the first varsity action of his career.

Sophomore kicker Parker Schillerstrom — who joined the program when his senior brother, Gavin, suffered an injury and left the placekicking duties in limbo — was 4-for-5 on PATs, missing only his first try when a false-start penalty backed the Dodgers up.

“It was great to see Parker step up and get our kicking game back on track,” Moser said. “We had quite a few guys playing their first significant (varsity snaps), and they did well. It was a positive step. Now we have to keep building momentum.”

Fort Dodge plays its final home game of the season this Friday against Denison-Schleswig (3-4, 1-2) in the first football meeting ever between the new district rivals. The Monarchs suffered a 42-14 loss to Le Mars last night.
