Matt Dillon had nothing but words of praise for the West Bend-Mallard football team here Friday night.

The Wolverines scored 26 points in the first quarter on their way to a convincing 70-26 triumph over St. Edmond inside Dodger Stadium.

“Physical,” Dillon said. “They came out and were physical with us from the opening kickoff. I didn’t think we did a good enough job of matching that, and when things started to go bad, they went bad in a hurry.”

West Bend-Mallard’s (1-1 overall, 1-0 in district) Max Fehr accounted for six touchdowns and ran for 117 yards as the Wolverines racked up 353 yards on the ground.

Landon Montag added 116 yards and two scores while Tyler Banwart, Klayton Jones and Cole Fehr all found the end zone. West Bend-Mallard also forced three turnovers and held the Gaels (1-1, 0-1) to just three first half first downs.

“We just didn’t match them physically,” Dillon said. “It’s really what it comes down to. We showed a few good things late in the game, but we had trouble getting going early on. And once we got behind, they made sure to continue to do what they wanted to do.

“Watching film, it was pretty easy to see they were going to line up and come right at us. That’s exactly what they did, and they did it to perfection.”

After forcing a three-and-out on St. Edmond’s initial possession of the game, the Wolverines marched right down the field behind Fehr. He led three scoring drives within the first six minutes and scored three times himself in the opening quarter.

West Bend-Mallard scored on drives consisting of seven, six, two, nine and two plays to go up 32-0 before St. Edmond could get some confidence.

Caleb Schaeffer found the end zone from five yards out, finishing off an eight-play drive. The junior threw for 204 yards but was picked off twice. Quinten McCarville had a career-high 11 receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown from Schaeffer, while Isaac Landwehr caught four passes for 82 yards and a score.

Klay Baker, a freshman, had his first high school touchdown in the fourth quarter, adding a two-point conversion run. Sophomore JT Laufersweiler led the final scoring drive, rushing for 41 yards.

“The one thing we have to make sure we do is not let this loss become two,” Dillon said. “We’ve got to get back to work and prepare for next Friday.”

Lucas Fehr and Max Fehr each had an interception with Aaron Massner recovering a fumble for the Wolverines, who face Bishop Garrigan in their home debut Friday night.

St. Edmond travels to Buffalo Center to meet North Iowa.
