BUFFALO CENTER -- Matt Dillon is just waiting for his St. Edmond football team to be the ones catching a break here or there.
That didn't happen on Friday night, as the Gaels suffered a 48-13 loss to North Iowa.
"We're banged up, short-handed, and honestly, we just haven't had anything go our way," Dillon said. "But we aren't giving up. The players continue to work hard, as do the coaches. We'll keep at it until we get it right."
St. Edmond (1-2 overall) is making the adjustment to eight-player football, and the Bison (1-2) were able to take advantage of some of their early mistakes.
North Iowa scored three first quarter touchdowns, including two on long pass plays. Brett Doege hit Noah Hofmann from 41 yards out and Brogyn Greensky from 56 yards. The senior finished 9 of 14 passing for 141 yards with four TDs, hitting both Hofmann and Greensky once more each.
"We'd get them in third-and-long, and they'd convert," Dillon said. "We just couldn't get them off the field. But that's part of the game. Football is football, whether you have eight on the field or 11.
"We've just got to do a better job of finishing drives, both on offense and defense."
Caleb Schaeffer, who was knocked out of the game in the first half with an injury, did find Quinten McCarville on a 40-yard scoring strike. McCarville eventually took over for Schaeffer at quarterback, leading a late drive that resulted in the first varsity TD for freshman Sam Myer.
McCarville caught two passes for 47 yards, completed 4 of 5 throws for 47 yards and had 20 yards rushing.
Tyler Rossmanith ran for 62 yards and Myer had 11.
Isaac Landwehr caught two passes for 59 yards.
"We found a few things there late that started clicking," Dillon said. "We'll get back after it in practice and prepare for next week."
Riley Sabin ran for 135 yards and two touchdowns for North Iowa, with Doege adding 58 and a score.
On defense, Landwehr had an interception and recovered a fumble, with McCarville also recovering a fumble. Rossmanith had a sack and Alex Tiernan was 1-for-2 kicking extra points.
St. Edmond returns home next Friday to face Harris-Lake Park.
