Dodgers, SE Valley continue ascension

The Fort Dodge football team cracked the Top-5 in Class 4A this week, while Southeast Valley inched one step closer to No. 1 in 2A.

The 4-0 Dodgers are tied for fourth in the latest Associated Press poll, released on Tuesday. Head coach Nik Moser’s squad is unbeaten through the first month for just the fourth time since 1984.

Fort Dodge opens district play at Webster City on Friday, squaring off with the Lynx for the first time since 1965.

The Jaguars (4-0) upended top-rated O-A/BC-IG last week, ending the two-time defending state champion Falcons’ 28-game overall winning streak. Southeast Valley moved from No. 3 to 2, with Spirit Lake taking over at No. 1.

Head coach Mike Swieter’s team visits third-ranked Estherville-Lincoln Central for another heavyweight showdown this Friday.

Humboldt remained fourth in 3A after running its record to a perfect 4-0 as well. Algona is tied for ninth.

The Wildcats take on Ballard this week at home. The Bulldogs host North Polk.

Pocahontas Area (3-1) is seventh in 2A. Newell-Fonda (4-0) is fifth in eight-player.

The Indians square off with Clarion-Goldfield/Dows on Friday. The Mustangs welcome Kingsley-Pierson.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy took over the No. 1 position in Class 5A after Southeast Polk lost to Ankeny. North Scott (4A), Harlan (3A), Van Meter (1A), West Hancock (A) and Anita-CAM (8-player) all remained No. 1.
