Local trio earns academic all-state honors

Christian Davidson, Cael Kolacia and Grant Heldorfer were not only key pieces to their respective baseball team this past summer, but they were also standouts in the classroom.

All three were honored recently as academic all-state by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Aric Laubenthal from Bishop Garrigan was a first team selection with Davidson, Kolacia, Heldorfer and Laubenthal’s teammate, Joe Trainer, making the second.

Davidson, a senior who is headed to Iowa Central, followed up four standout seasons for Pocahontas Area with an all-conference campaign for Fort Dodge. He hit .336 with 12 doubles, four triples, a homer, 31 RBI and 28 runs scored while also stealing 11 bases.

On the mound, Davidson went 1-3 with a 3.65 earned run average and 32 strikeouts in 23 innings. He also had a fielding percentage of .854.

Kolacia, who will attend Iowa Western in the fall to continue his career, was 4-2 with 39 strikeouts in just under 22 innings, sporting an earned run average of 2.26.

Heldorfer hit a team-high .442 with 13 extra-base hits, 15 RBI, 12 walks, 29 runs and 19 steals. The all-conference performer had a .933 fielding percentage.

Players for academic all-state were nominated by their coaches as those who demonstrate outstanding academic, moral and athletic characteristics. Twenty-four are named to the first team with 21 on the second.

The IHSBCA also named all-district players with Davidson and teammate Drake Callon earning second team honors in Class 4A.

In 3A, Webster City’s Tyler Olson, CJ Hisler and Ty McKinney were named first team alongside Eagle Grove’s Jake Jeske and Humboldt’s Cade Witzke. Chase Rattenborg made the second team from Webster City along with Humboldt’s Caden Matson and Jacob Thurm, and Algona’s Wyatt Streit, Aaron Weringa and Cameron Rindone.

Making the all-district first team in 2A were Pocahontas Area’s Trey Oehlertz and Tyce Ruffridge, and Emmetsburg’s Lex Kassel. Kolson Kruse from Southeast Valley, Keaton Duhn of Emmetsburg and Gavin Ehn from Pocahontas Area were on the second team.

Earning first team 1A all-district status were Heldorfer and Gael teammates Devon Wirtz and Peyton Scott. Newell-Fonda’s Hunter Christansen, Gabe Sievers, Ryan Greenfield and Hogan Henrich also made the list while second team honors going to Isaiah Byrkeland, Kyphus Goche and Garrett Heying of Bishop Garrigan, and Mason Dicks and Trey Jungers of Newell-Fonda.
