Area athletes earn all-state honors

Five Messenger-area players were named all-state by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association.

Pocahontas Area’s Trey Oehlertz was a first team selection in Class 2A, Webster City’s Tyler Olson made the second team in 3A, while third team selections were CJ Hisler of Webster City, Kyphus Goche of Bishop Garrigan and Ryan Greenfield from Newell-Fonda.

Oehlertz, a senior, hit .467 with 42 runs, 13 extra-base hits and drew 18 walks at the plate. He was also a perfect 15-for-15 on stolen bases with a .902 fielding percentage.

Olson helped Webster City secure another North Central Conference title and reach a 3A substate final. The Iowa Central recruit was 8-0 on the mound with 88 strikeouts in just under 57 innings, as opponents hit just .085 against him.

Hisler was tabbed as an outfielder, as the Lynx sophomore hit .462 with 24 runs, 10 extra-base hits, 38 RBI and stole 11 bases.

Goche, a senior outfielder for the Golden Bears, had 28 runs, five extra-base hits, 16 RBI and stole 29 bases. He also had a .953 fielding percentage and hit .345.

Greenfield, a sophomore outfielder, hit .476 with 29 RBI and 12 extra-base hits for the Mustangs. He also had 20 steals and a .921 fielding percentage.

Team captains were Blaine Harpeanau of Remsen St. Mary’s (1A), Zach Pleggenkuhle of Van Meter (2A), Owen Puk from Marion (3A) and Brody Brecht of Ankeny (4A).
