Gaels begin district baseball journey

ALGONA — The St. Edmond baseball team will compete on a familiar field here Saturday as they begin postseason play.

The Gaels have again been placed in the same district as Bishop Garrigan, who will serve as the host for two games. St. Edmond takes on Harris-Lake Park first at 5 p.m. with the Golden Bears playing GTRA at 7 p.m. The winners meet back here on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The Gaels (9-14 overall) ended the regular season with a 10-0 victory over Iowa Falls-Alden, going 3-3 down the stretch. They also bested Bishop Garrigan and Clarion-Goldfield/Dows around losses to Hampton-Dumont/CAL, North Central Conference champion Webster City and Humboldt.

Senior Grant Heldorfer leads SEHS in batting at .437, adding 13 RBI, six triples 19 steals and 26 runs scored. John Nemmers had 17 RBI with Devon Wirtz and Peyton Scott adding 12 each. Scott, Wirtz, Derrig, Nemmers and Bartlett are all hitting over .300.

On the mound, Cael Kolacia is 3-2 with 30 strikeouts in just over 17 innings, Scott is 1-4 with 47 strikeouts in 34 innings and Hayden Derrig has 26 strikeouts.

Harris-Lake Park (4-15) topped Storm Lake St. Mary’s, 17-2, in its most recent contest, snapping a four-game losing streak. Austin Gilmore is the leading hitter for the Wolves at .365 with eight RBI and 19 hits.

Senior Easton Brevik has 28 strikeouts, Caleb Hemphill 22 and Cole Ihnen is 3-5 with 21.

On the top half of the bracket, Newell-Fonda host North Union and West Hancock play West Bend-Mallard.

The district championship is scheduled for next Saturday with the substate final to be played on July 20.
